Sacai’s Nike Magmascape Is a Freaky Sneaker-Boot Hybrid
Nike and Sacai are once again mashing up models from disparate eras, this time resulting in one freaky boot.
The regular collaborators are debuting the Magmascape, a hybrid hiking boot that brings elements from the Air Magma and Air Footscape. The formula for the mashup is relatively simple. Up top is the collar from the Air Magma, a hiking boot that dates back to the ’80s and was a predecessor to the ACG line, as well as the majority of the sole unit. The Air Footscape, a running sneaker launched in 1996, then forms the majority of the upper. Sandwiched in the middle is an all-new, full-length mudguard with an irregular shape that almost look like it’s covered in indoor rock climbing holds.
Suede and mesh form the upper, which hosts an asymmetrical and double-lacing system, one of which features a speed-lace toggle. Those familiar with the Air Footscape will also recognize the anvil-shaped heel stabilizer, which now takes on slightly sharper lines.
Two colorways are arriving for the Magmascape’s debut. “Pecan” mixes shades of brown with black, while “Varsity Royal” opts for blue, grey, and black along with sparse turquoise detailing. Either should provide a functional but also somewhat whimsical choice for winter.
Just today, Sacai released a new version of its VaporWaffle hybrid sneaker along with Jean Paul Gaultier as a third collaborator.
The Sacai x Nike Magmascape will get an early launch Nov. 30 in-person in Japan, followed by a Dec. 6 release through Sacai’s website and Dec. 7 on the SNKRS app. Pricing is set at $200.
