‘I’m not one to listen’ – Spurs player says he ignores negative remarks from fans
Emerson Royal says he is aware of the scathing criticism he has received from Brazil fans recently but insisted that he does not pay too much attention to those negative remarks.
Emerson is no stranger to having supporters on his back, with the right-back getting plenty of criticism during his first year at Tottenham. In fact, he was even looked at as a joke by some people but he managed to eventually win over the fan base.
It looks like the Tottenham man is now facing similar criticism in his home country on the back of his two performances during the international break.
The Selecao lost to both Colombia and Argentina over the past week, with the Spurs star being particularly blamed for the former, with Globo Esporte handing him a rating of just 3.5 out of 10 and suggesting that he struggled to cope with Luiz Diaz.
Emerson Royal pays no attention to fan criticism
When asked about the criticism, Emerson has now told the same publication: “I get a lot of criticism, I’ve seen the fans saying this and that… that I didn’t know how to play football. I’m not one to listen. It’s a process.”
The right-back insisted that Brazil are in a transitional phase at the moment and results will turn around once the players get accustomed to the ideas of their new manager, Fernando Diniz.
The Tottenham man added: “There are a lot of new players, practically the whole team has changed. We have a different style of play, not the same as Tite. The fans have to understand that.
“It’s not easy to play like this. Few teams in the world play like this. What Diniz has been doing with the national team is very difficult.
“The fans have to be patient and understand this process. We’ll get the wins, we’ll get the small details right that have been causing us to concede goals. And we’re Brazilians, we’re always good on the ball.”
Spurs Web Opinion
There is no doubting Emerson’s self-belief and his mental toughness as he showed plenty of both to win Tottenham fans over. I certainly would not put it beyond him to do the same with Brazilian supporters.
