7 shows like 'XO, Kitty' to watch while you're waiting for season 2

In 2023, Netflix decided to take the "To All the Boys" franchise in a new direction — by following Lara Jean's younger sister, Kitty, to high school in Seoul.

"XO, Kitty" follows the youngest Covey sister (Anna Cathcart) as she finally casts aside her matchmaker role, chasing romance for herself in South Korea. Intending to surprise her long-distance boyfriend Dae, who she met on a family trip to Seoul, she enrolls in his international high school — coincidentally, the same one that her mother attended as a teenager. Upon arrival, she's promptly shuffled into romantic shenanigans befitting of any teen drama, and spends a semester learning both about herself and her family history.

There's plenty to love about "XO, Kitty," from its bangers-only K-pop soundtrack to its colorful cast of characters. While you're waiting for season two of the series, here are some other shows that you can check out in the meantime.

1. "Never Have I Ever"

Summary: "Never Have I Ever" stars Maitreyi Ramakrishnan as Devi Vishwakumar, a high schooler living out some of her messiest years before college. Like any healthy teen drama, it features a love triangle between Devi, Paxton Hall-Yoshida (Darren Barnet) and Ben Gross (Jaren Lewison). The series concluded with a fourth and final season that premiered in June. That means it's fully bingeable at your leisure, without having to wait around on any cliffhanger endings — and yes, there's at least one of those.

Why you'll like it: If you liked the off-the-walls teen drama in "XO, Kitty," you'll probably like it in "Never Have I Ever" too.

2. "Business Proposal"

Summary: Netflix's Korean-language series "Business Proposal," based on the webtoon series of the same name, follows Shin Ha-ri (Kim Se-jeong), a corporate worker. Ha-ri fills in for her friend Jin Young-seo (Seol In-ah) on an arranged date, intending to behave so poorly that the mystery guy rejects her and moves on. However, her date turns out to be Kang Tae-moo (Ahn Hyo-seop), the CEO of the food company where Ha-ri works — and even worse, he's determined to marry her to get his meddling grandfather out of his dating life.

Why you'll like it: For a healthy dose of trope-y, K-drama goodness (this time with a cast of adults), this is your pick. "Business Proposal" is slightly more mature than "XO, Kitty," but it has the same goofy spirit — on top of, frankly, one of the hottest kisses (spoilers!) ever seen on television. Its 10 episodes are well-worth your time, if you're looking to while away a weekend with some delightful, soapy drama.

3. "Heartstopper"

Summary: This British coming-of-age series, which is based on Alice Oseman's comic series of the same name, follows gay teenager Charlie Spring (Joe Locke) and his budding relationship with rugby star Nick Nelson (Kit Connor). The show features an ensemble cast of queer characters as well, each exploring their own identities and relationships.

Why you'll like it: If you want more teen drama, but perhaps not quite as fast-paced, you should check out "Heartstopper." It's much less chaotic than "XO, Kitty" — but if you're looking for some good pop-music needle drops, and a heavy pour of teenage whimsy, it's a safe bet.

4. "So Not Worth It"

Summary: "So Not Worth It" follows a group of college students living together in an international dorm at a Korean university. Resident advisor Se-wan (Park Se-wan), leads a cast that includes (G)I-dle member Minnie, South Korea-based American actor Carson Allen, and Korean-Nigerian model and variety personality Han Hyun-min.

Why you'll like it: For more international school drama set in Seoul, check out this Netflix Korean-language sitcom. The stakes in "So Not Worth It" aren't particularly high, but if you're looking for a similarly diverse cast, school shenanigans, and laughs, it'd be a good one to check out.

5. "Ouran High School Host Club"

Summary: A classic that any anime fan should watch or read in their lifetime, "Ouran High School Host Club" follows Haruhi, a new scholarship student at an academy for rich kids. After breaking an expensive vase while looking for a quiet place to study, she's forced to pay back her debt by working for the school's host club — a group of idle young men who politely host and chatter with the school's girls. The twist? The host club members, by virtue of Haruhi's short hair and masculine clothing, assume she's a boy — and she begins working off her debt as a host before they realize she's not.

Why you'll like it: The shenanigans on "XO, Kitty" are a delightful match for the rambunctious energy of 2000s anime comedy "Ouran High School Host Club." The show also features some thoughtful ruminations on gender and adolescent friendship — but at it's core, it's just a ton of fun.

6. "Grey's Anatomy"

Summary: Watching the first season of "Grey's Anatomy," which has starred Ellen Pompeo for most of its 19-season run, is a bit like reading a textbook. Meredith Grey (Pompeo), Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh), Izzie Stevens (Katherine Heigl), George O'Malley (T.R. Knight), and Alex Karev (Justin Chambers) muddle their way through their medical internship at Seattle Grace Hospital, it's hard not to feel like creator Shonda Rhimes is laying down the law for romantic dramas for years to come.

Why you'll like it: If "XO, Kitty" nailed soapy, romantic tropes, it was "Grey's Anatomy" that made those tropes part of the television canon. You don't have to watch all of "Grey's" to appreciate the brilliance of its early seasons — or to get sucked into the delightful, trope-y romance. That said, it's also quite a bit more mature than "XO, Kitty," and probably not a great bet if you can't stomach at least a bit of on-screen medicine.

7. "The Summer I Turned Pretty"

Summary: Adapted from Jenny Han's trilogy of the same name, "The Summer I Turned Pretty" follows follows Isabel "Belly" Conklin (Lola Tung), a teenager whose family spends the summers with her mother's friend — and her two sons. As Belly approaches her 16th birthday, her relationships with the boys change, and she starts to come into her own.

Why you'll like it: This is another show in the broader Jenny Han-verse (Han wrote "To All The Boys" and is the showrunner of "XO, Kitty"). For another romance-savvy coming-of-age story, "The Summer I Turned Pretty" is a good bet.
