Liz Cheney exposes secret GOP memo that said Trump 'corrupted the political process'
Former Republican Rep. Liz Cheney (WY) dropped several bombshells on Monday night.
Speaking to MSNBC's Rachel Maddow, Cheney walked through some of the bombshells in her book, "Oath and Honor: A Memoir and a Warning," which will drop at midnight Tuesday.
The host began with a list of things that she and Cheney disagree with and her frustrations in not snagging an interview with her 13 years ago. Despite the policy differences, many Democrats are lionizing the conservative lawmaker while she battles former President Donald Trump over his attempt to overthrow the U.S. election.
One of the excerpts Maddow read cited constituents in Wyoming who were touting people like Rudy Giuliani and Sidney Powell. Cheney writes that supporters were "completely unaware of what had actually happened."
A previously unreported and unreleased Republican Party memo concluded "that President Trump's conduct ... was a serious act, political in nature, that corrupted our subverted the political process and threatened the order of political society," Cheney writes in the book.
That changed as Kevin McCarthy raced to Mar-a-Lago to help a "depressed" Donald, who "wasn't eating."
Meanwhile, "McCarthy's chief counsel, Machalagh Carr," told Cheney "she had made clear to [now-Speaker Mike] Johnson that his letter" and the effort he was putting together to get Republicans to support the 2020 election overthrow was "wrong, and that he knew it was."
When Cheney discussed it one afternoon, the council said she "pushed back very strongly."
Cheney quotes from an email that lawyer sent to Johnson: "He knows he is wrong on the fundamental constitutional principle. And his argument — that he has some sort of power to individually determine — absent due process of any sort — that a state didn't meet their constitutional obligation, and then that the remedy should be that — without any process whatsoever, the federal congress gets to overturn the will of the people — is astonishing."
Johnson promoted things that he knew were false, and he continued to promote things that he knew were lies.
There has been an ongoing concern that Republicans will attempt to obstruct the 2024 election with Johnson as the Speaker.
