I’m a gypsy girl and I ‘ran away to get married’ at 19 – but it doesn’t mean what you think
A GYPSY girl has revealed that she ‘ran away to get married’ when she was 19-years-old, but that this means something completely different to travellers than it does to ‘country folk’.
Trewley Precious often shares insights into the differences between travellers and non-travellers to her TikTok account, where she is known as @trewleyprecious.
In one video, Trewley explained what ‘running away to get married‘ means in her community.
She said that in the Gypsy community, people are not supposed to have sex before they get married, but if they don’t want to wait until their parents or the church say they can get married they ‘run away to get married’ instead.
Trewley explained: “Anyone who is not part of the gypsy community would just see this as someone giving their virginity to their boyfriend:”
In a follow up video, Trewley said that she never lived with the man she ‘married’ or had children with him, but at family events people referred to him as her ‘husband’.
She said that she was with the man for four years before leaving him because she “deserved better”.
Trewley explained that she was glad that she never legally married the man and that her parents were happy when she got out of the situation as it was “toxic.”
She added that she chose to ‘run away’ with him as her parents would never have let her get legally married that young.
Trewley also explained that she is not the first in her family to do this and that her sister actually ran away from home and got a house and had children with a man she was not legally married to.
TikTok users have flooded the video’s comments section to share their thoughts on Trewley’s revelation.
One user said: “You are such an interesting person! I love learning something new every time you post.”
Another added: “Fully get it, I’m not a traveller/gypsy- she didn’t hopelessly romantically run away like in the movies. It’s a figure of speech.”
