The draught in my home used to drive me crazy until I stopped it using a hairdryer & clingfilm – who needs new windows?
A SAVVY woman has shared how she tackles cold breeze and makes her home toasty with clingfilm and hairdryer.
As the weather gets colder, many households across the nation are finally switching the heating on to stay warm indoors – however, this can work out to be pretty costly for those living in older buildings.
This is because the previous generation of windows, as stunning as they might be, can be a nuisance when it comes to draughts, while single-glazed panes are known to lose a lot of heat.
Of course, the obvious solution to improve heat loss from your windows is to get them replaced with energy efficient double – or even triple – glazing, experts at Village Heating explained.
However, for many cash-strapped families in the UK, this is not always a viable solution – but luckily, there are cheaper options which can simulate a similar effect.
One such hack was shared on TikTok by mum Taryn, who explained how she tackles the issue without spending thousands of brand new windows.
Rather than forking out a fortune, the thrifty parent, believed to be from the USA, simply uses common household items – some clingfilm and her hairdryer, as well as a bit of double-sided tape to secure the plastic sheet.
The steps here, she demonstrated in the clip, are relatively easy too, as you first start by giving the windows a good clean and then go over the frame with the tape.
Once done, measure the plastic sheet – it can also be a specialist window glazing sheet, but bear in mind that’s a more expensive solution – and stick it onto the tape.
After you’re done trimming the excess sheet or clingfilm off with a pair of scissors, Taryn advised to grab the hairdyrer and go over the edges ”to heat it up”.
This crucial step, she added, will also make the DIY window ”tighter” whilst also ensuring ”a better seal”.
According to Taryn, who first learnt this from her ”low income” parents, the trick is so effective, everyone should be doing it.
”Being well into adulthood and realising not everyone plastics their windows – but still doing it because it’s cheaper than new windows and the slight breeze by your old windows drives you crazy,” she said in her video.
The best part? The cash-savvy mum, who homeschools her tots, added that someone had claimed the hack also works wonders for condensation – a win-win.
Since being posted on the platform, where the thrifty mum is best known as @talkswtaryn, the hack has gone viral, winning her over 64k likes.
Hundreds of totally amazed social media users raced to comments – however, not everyone would be racing to give the trick a go.
Some critics, for instance, had an issue with the ventilation, with one writing: ”I can’t do this because I’m a fresh air girlie, I have to air my house.”
Another chimed in, claiming the results didn’t last long: ”I tried this for a coiple of years but the wind literally tears it all down.”
But there were also plenty of those raving about the budget-friendly hack.
”Canadian here with an older house and yes girl! Cheap and easy way to keep that bill down.”
”My kitchen window has the worst draft in the house. She is getting wrapped ASAP [as soon as possible],” a fourth chimed in.
