Schools in lockdown as armed cops and helicopter rush to ‘serious’ Aberfan assault and warn public to avoid area
SCHOOLS are in lockdown after armed cops and a helicopter rushed to a “serious” assault in Aberfan – warning the public to avoid the area.
Cops scrambled to reports of an attack in the south Wales town earlier this morning.
Armed police are still in the area, with schools locking down as a precaution.
South Wales Police said: “Emergency services are responding to serious assault that took place on Moy Road, Aberfan, Merthyr just before 9.10am this morning.
“Armed officers are in the area, and we request that people avoid the area so that we can effectively deal with this incident.
“More detail will follow as soon as available.”
The Welsh ambulance service said: “We were called today (05 Dec), at approximately 9:10am, to reports of an incident in Aberfan, Merthyr Tydfil.
“We sent one emergency ambulance, one air ambulance and one Cymru High Acuity Response unit to the scene.
“Advanced critical care support was delivered by the Emergency Medical Retrieval and Transfer Service.
“We conveyed one patient by road to University Hospital Of Wales, Cardiff for further treatment.”
Afon Taf High School, Greenfield Special School and Trinity Childcare all said they have locked down as a precaution – with all staff and children safe.
It is understood that the schools and childcare centre are not connected to the assault.
Afon Taf High School told parents: “The school is currently on lockdown due to a police incident in the village.
“All pupils are safe. Please do not contact pupils as everyone is fine.”
Greenfield Special School said: “We are aware of an ongoing police incident in Aberfan.
“We just wanted to reassure you that as a precaution we are keeping the pupils safe inside the buidling, and all perimeter gates are locked.
“Please be assured that we will keep you informed of any updates as and when appropriate.”
