Manhunt for knifeman after woman, 29, stabbed in South Wales village
Armed police have descended onto the Welsh village of Aberfan after a 29-year old woman was stabbed this morning.
Police were called to the incident in Moy Road in Aberfan, Merthyr, just before 9.10am and armed officers are searching for the suspect, who left the scene, according to South Wales Police.
They said in a statement: ‘The woman has been taken to hospital with injuries which are not believed to be life-threatening at this time.’
A local living near the scene for more than 30 years, Susan Prothero, said: ‘It’s a very quiet area… nothing like this has happened here.’
A nearby primary school has been locked down while police are urging people to avoid the area, with parents being sent texts about the lockdown.
It read: ‘Due to an incident in the locality school is currently on lockdown as a precautionary measure.
‘All children are well, we will update parents in due course. Please do not call the school as we are keeping the lines free incase police need to call.’
South Wales Police said: ‘Emergency services are responding to [a] serious assault that took place on Moy Road, Aberfan, Merthyr just before 9.10am this morning.
‘Armed officers are in the area, and we request that people avoid the area so that we can effectively deal with this incident.’
Local journalist Emily Price shared on Twitter that a helicopter has been circling overhead for around half an hour.
Trinity Childcare and Family Centre in Aberfan has also been put on lockdown, and said: ‘We are currently in lockdown as a precaution due to an incident within the community.’
Welsh Ambulance Service said: ‘We were called today at approximately 9:10am, to reports of an incident in Aberfan, Merthyr Tydfil.

‘We sent one emergency ambulance, one air ambulance and one Cymru High Acuity Response unit to the scene where advanced critical care support was delivered by the Emergency Medical Retrieval and Transfer Service.
‘We conveyed one patient by road to University Hospital Of Wales, Cardiff for further treatment.’
Aberfan’s MP Gerald Jones said he had spoken to police about the incident and urged locals to cooperate with the officers.
Senedd member Dawn Bowden added: ‘I am aware of a serious incident in Aberfan this morning. I have spoken to the police and will await further information from them.
‘However, please take advice given by the police who will be grateful for your co-operation while this incident is dealt with.’
Where is Aberfan?
Aberfan is a small former coal mining village six miles south of Merthyr Tydfil and 20 miles north of Cardiff.
In 1966, it was the site of a disaster which saw a massive landslide claim the lives of 116 children and 28 adults.
