Billions of Android users warned to delete spy apps that ‘read texts and passwords’ – two mistakes you must never make
CYBERSECURITY experts have warned Android users about spyware apps that can steal sensitive data.
Hackers have created thousands of apps that are designed to steal your information and money.
And one of the biggest ways cybercriminals do this is via Android software thanks to its open-source program.
Malicious apps include malware programs like trojans, adware, stalkerware, keyloggers – and spyware.
WHAT IS SPYWARE?
Spyware is a type of malicious software that is installed on a device without the end user’s knowledge.
It silently infiltrates the device, stealing private information and internet usage data.
“For example, with access to all notifications, a malicious app can read almost all of the user’s incoming correspondence,” cybersecurity firm Kaspersky noted.
“In particular, it can intercept messages containing one-time codes for confirming bank transactions, logging in to various services (such as messengers), changing passwords, and so on.”
The software then brings this data back to advertisers or third parties, like hackers.
“A malicious app can use the information obtained from notifications to hijack user accounts,” Kaspersky explained.
“And all this without any extra tricks, complex technical gimmicks, or expensive vulnerabilities — just exploiting Android’s built-in capabilities.”
Spyware might get on your device if someone intentionally installs it, or through unsafe downloads.
Unsafe downloads can come from apps that purport themselves to be helpful or legitimate tools.
They can also come from clicking on pop-ups and links in strange emails and websites can also implant spyware onto your device.
HOW TO DETECT SPYWARE
Many signs can indicate that you have spyware on your phone, such as your phone overheating, performance dropping, and faster battery drain.
Another surefire sign your phone has been infected with spyware is persistent pop-up ads.
HOW TO REMOVE SPYWARE
To remove these apps, you can manually sift through your device and delete them off your device.
You can also run a spyware removal app if you’re having trouble detecting such apps.
However, you must use legitimate security software for this, like Norton or McAfee.
