Kevin McCarthy threatened to primary GOPers if they opposed Trump on Jan. 6: Liz Cheney
In the days leading up to the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, supporters of Donald Trump were using their power to demand others fall in line.
In former Rep. Liz Cheney's (R-WY) new book, "Oath and Honor," she describes Rep. Debbie Lesko (R-AZ) as seriously concerned about the safety and security of the members as the Jan. 6 protests were being planned. During a Republican House call, she demanded that there be a security plan and that vehicles be available to usher members quickly out of the Capitol.
Then-minority leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) assured her that he was coordinating with the Capitol Police and there was a plan — though, as it turned out, members were left hiding under their desks and fumbling to open their gas masks.
"That night [Jan. 5], Eric Trump, the president’s son, appeared on Sean Hannity’s show on Fox News," wrote Cheney. "He said there would be consequences for any member who did not do what his father wanted, threatening that 'any senator or any congressman… that does not fight tomorrow… their political career is over.'"
One senior Republican House member sent a text message to Cheney, saying, “Eric Trump is on Hannity threatening/promising primaries for anyone who does not object. Where is our leadership? Is this what our party has become? I’m beyond disgusted.”

Meanwhile, Hannity was text-messaging Trump's chief of staff, Mark Meadows, that he was "very worried about the next 48 hours." But he didn't push back on Eric Trump.
To make matters worse, Cheney said that freshman members of Congress "were reporting to me that Kevin McCarthy was making the same threat in meetings with them."
"Kevin knows this is unconstitutional, but Trump has threatened him, so he feels he has to object and wants as many people with him as possible," Cheney replied to the senior House member.
"I agreed it was disgusting."
