6.2 magnitude earthquake kills 118 in Northwest China
A powerful magnitude-6.2 earthquake struck a remote, mountainous county at the northern edge of the Qinghai-Tibetan plateau just around midnight on Tuesday. This devastating natural disaster led to the tragic loss of at least 118 lives while leaving over 400 individuals injured. The quake’s impact was felt most acutely in this sparsely populated region, known for its challenging terrain and limited accessibility, complicating rescue and relief efforts.
Chinese media have reported the magnitude of the earthquake was 6.2, and it occurred on Monday night.
Rescue and relief efforts have been initiated, including a team sent to evaluate the disaster’s impact. The number of missing persons post-quake is still uncertain.
On the edge of the quake-prone Qinghai-Tibetan plateau, Western provinces such as Gansu frequently experience seismic activity. China’s deadliest recent earthquake was a magnitude 8.0 in Sichuan in 2008, resulting in almost 70,000 deaths.
Around 2,200 rescue workers, encompassing provincial fire department staff, forest brigades, professional emergency teams, and military and police units, have been deployed to the earthquake-stricken area for swift and effective disaster response.
According to reports, the earthquake’s epicentre was the border region between Gansu-Qinghai, two northwestern provinces of China.
Following the earthquake, China’s National Commission for Disaster Reduction and the Ministry of Emergency Management activated a level-four warning.
It is said that some water, electricity, transportation, and communication infrastructures have also been damaged in this earthquake.
The earthquake also had at least 9 aftershocks with a magnitude of 3.0.
