‘Peaceful’ UK town home to one of the country’s biggest waterfalls and very famous cheese
A SMALL town in the UK has captured the hearts of visitors, due to the small waterfalls that flow between the old stone houses.
Gayle Beck, near the confluence of the River Ure, gushes through the streets of Hawes, a tiny market town in the Yorkshire Dales.
It came out on top of a list of the “most charming” towns in the county, put together by Hotels.com.
They raved about its quaint streets and homes, while also speaking highly of its sights and history.
They said: “The town itself consists of charming old stone houses around the beautiful beck and its own little waterfalls. It acts as a focal point for walkers wanting to explore the surrounding countryside.
“However, it’s also got the Hardraw Force – the highest single-drop waterfall in England.”
Hardraw Force is one of the most visited spots in the area – although its location might have some thing to do with that, as it’s found in the grounds of a pub.
Tumbling more than 100ft, the falls are are located behind the Green Dragon Inn, a tavern that has been in its current location since the 13th century.
Tourists take the opportunity to pop in for a pint before heading through the turnstile to look at the falls plummeting around the back.
The falls are very well known, not least because they were used in Robin Hood Prince of Thieves, for a scene where Maid Marion spies Robin Hood bathing beneath in the waters beneath.
In most places a huge waterfall behind a pub would arguably be the main visitor attraction, however Hawes has something else that people like to see when in town.
Hotels continued: “Hawes is most famous for being the birthplace of Wensleydale cheese and is still home to the Wensleydale Creamery where it’s made.”
The cheese is made on-site, as it has been since it opened there in 1897 and has become a favourite throughout the UK.
Guests can take tours around the wensleydale HQ and sample the many various delights they make there.
Someone who loved their visit to the creamery was Yorkshire-related blog The Yorkshireman.
They wrote: “The tours provide a fantastic insight into life at the creamery, with a cheese and gift shop on-site so you can take the tasty experience home with you.
“You can, of course, eat your body weight in delicious cheeses as the team talks you through their history and how it’s all made.”
They also shared footage of their visit on Tiktok (@the.yorkshireman), showing off its cobbled streets, Gayle Beck flowing through the town and some of the small pubs and shops.
They captioned their video: “Hawes is probably one of the most peaceful places in the Yorkshire Dales.
“Loved pottering around and seeing Gayle Beck running through the town.”
Meanwhile, this waterfall can be found in a cave that was used as a filming location in a Batman movie.
And this UK waterfall is bigger than Niagara falls.
