Benidorm creator drops huge hint legendary comedy could return as he makes big announcement – five years after axe
BENIDORM’S creator has teased the hit comedy could make a sensational comeback.
Derren Litten, 53, created the hugely popular programme that ran for 10 series on ITV.
Just two months ago, Derren revealed his brand new career as a radio DJ in Spain.
Yet it appears telly is back in his sights – five years after the show was axed from screens.
The writer – who even guest-starred in a number of Benidorm episodes – took to his X profile to speculate on further episodes.
He wrote: “I would like to take this opportunity to make a public statement.
“It’s been a difficult decision but I’ve decided to return back to writing for both television and theatre.”
Adding fuel to the speculation, he added: “I have had clear, recent indications that certain TV channels are interested in my decision and I hope you will be watching the fruits of my labour in time to come.”
Derren then added his signature wit as he concluded: “Obviously there are always rumours surrounding such announcements but I would like to make it clear my decision to come out of retirement is purely to spend less time with my family.”
This isn’t the first time Derren has teased a Benidorm comeback, touting the idea back in October.
The Sun previously revealed ITV were axing Benidorm as the show suffered a drop in ratings.
A TV source at the time told us: “Benidorm has been a huge success for ITV for a decade, but bosses feel it’s run its course.
“The ratings have started to drop off and a number of the fan favourites have left, so it just feels as though the time is right to let it go out while it’s still on a high.
“It has been ITV’s longest running comedy, which is a real achievement.”
Benidorm is still available to watch as a boxset on ITVX, the broadcaster’s streaming service.
