Heat your home without electricity – my 4 methods are great to reduce your bills & can be a lifesaver in a power outage
A SURVIVAL expert has revealed his four methods for heating your home without electricity.
They are great ways to reduce your bills and can be a lifesaver in a power outage.
Survival Extreme (@SurvivalExtreme) shares many tips and tricks to endure extenuating circumstances on his YouTube channel.
In this post, he focused on the specter of winter power outages and how people could sustain themselves.
“The four methods to heat your home without electricity,” he began.
There was a lot of common sense in his suggestions.
1. Designated Heating Room
His first tip was to make a designated heating room.
“Make a place where everyone can meet up in case the power goes out,” he explained.
But there were further things you could do to keep the cold out.
“Put weather stripping in the windows and doors and put a thick rug on the floor to keep the heat in.
“After the insulation is done, add other heat sources like a wood stove or a gas heater so you can stay warm when there is no electricity.”
Into this room, also add “sofas and thick blankets”, he advised, and mattresses if you needed to sleep.
He had a word of warning: “Make sure to turn off her heater before you go to sleep.”
2. Kerosene Heater
Invest in a kerosene heater, he said: “They are a must-have in homes where there is a risk of losing power or where services aren’t always best.”
This liquid is easy to burn, but must be used with caution, he said.
“It must be used with great care because it gives off vapors that can be dangerous to people and animals.”
Nonetheless, their design has evolved over the decades: “It is much safer to use a kerosene heater indoors now than in the past,” he said.
3. Put On Extra Clothes
This might be an instinctive reaction to power outages.
“If you can’t heat your home, put on layers of thick clothes,” he urged.
“Start with warm basics then depending on how cold it is, add a sweater or a jacket.
“When the power goes off you can also wrap yourself in a warm blanket.”
And don’t forget about your extremities: “It is also important to choose thick gloves and warm socks since you loose most of your body heat through your hands and feet.”
4. Make your own heater
His final and fourth tip required some rudimental DIY.
“The most effective way of heating your home without electricity is to make your own heater,” he said.
“You can easily make an indoor heater that doesn’t need electricity with things you already have at home.”
This included a clay pot heater using candles, that will provide some heat in a power outage.
