Most popular used cars in UK from 2023 revealed – as surprise model that’s over 10 years old hits top spot
THE most popular used cars in the UK of 2023 have been revealed, with the trusty Mazda CX5 taking the top spot.
The Mazda CX5, an SUV launched in the UK in 2012, was snapped up faster than any other model on the AA Cars site in 2023.
SUVs filled six of the spots on the 10 fastest-selling cars list — including the top four positions: the Vauxhall Grandland, the Hyundai Tucson and Kia Sportage.
Positions nine and ten were also filled by SUVs.
Hatchbacks and city cars dominated 2022’s list as drivers prioritised fuel-efficient cars, reversing the previous year’s ranking in which eight out of 10 of the quickest-selling vehicles were SUVs.
A separate analysis of the most searched-for models on AA Cars confirmed the Ford Fiesta as the most popular used car for the ninth year running, with another Ford, the slightly larger Focus, coming in second place for the fourth year in a row.
It has been a mixed year for the Ford Fiesta though, as the final models rolled off production lines in 2023.
New entries into this year’s top 10 include the Audi A3 and Ford Transit van, which dropped out of the ranking last year.
Mark Oakley, Director of AA Cars, said: “SUVs, many of which are family cars, have bounced back from a quiet 2022 to reclaim their dominance as the fastest-selling cars of the year, alongside smaller family cars.
“The sharp rise in the cost of fuel, alongside other financial pressures, made hatchbacks and city cars much more attractive last year, but that trend was short-lived and the demand for bigger vehicles remains undimmed.
“Although drivers are snapping up SUVs faster than any other type of car, there are just two SUVs on the most searched-for list — the Nissan Qashqai and Ford Kuga.”
“Once again, the all-conquering Ford Fiesta has come out on top, despite production ending this year.
“The sheer number of Fiestas on the road will ensure this perennial favourite remains a major player on the second-hand market for some time, but its competitors could start challenging for the top spot in the coming years.”
The results come after a car dealer revealed the exact time you should buy a new motor in the New Year to get the best deal.
Meanwhile, a man revealed how he transformed his Ford Fiesta into a tiny home after ditching his £150-a-week shoebox flat.
