Asda shoppers’ minds are blown after spotting messages on bags that can save you cash – have you spotted it?
SHOPPERS are losing their minds after learning a little-known fact about Asda shopping bags and it could save you cash.
At this point, we are all well aware of the charge many supermarkets now demand for reusable bags for life.
It started with 5p and now many supermarkets charge up to 30p for their bags for life which are supposed to be durable.
However, that isn’t always the case, sometimes you may have a particularly weak handle or a pointy object in your bag which causes a tear and you have to fork out for a replacement.
Well, now Asda shoppers have learned you are entitled to get a replacement completely free of charge if yours is damaged.
The discovery was made in the Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK group Facebook group online.
One stunned shopper said: “So I don’t know if there are people out there that know this (my friend didn’t when I mentioned it to her).”
“The bags for life are called bags for LIFE because if they rip or get damaged then the store replaces them free of charge.”
“You can thank me later. This isn’t for only Asda, it’s for all bags for life.”
The post racked up hundreds of comments and dozens of responses with many people stunned they never knew the supermarket secret.
One user said: “Tesco replace theirs too.”
Someone else pointed out: “I’ve got that many bags for life I’m going to live forever.”
“Oh my,” said a third user and a fourth protested: “I have tons to spare.”
The Sun has done some digging and we can confirm the following supermarkets have said they will replace damaged bags for life in stores:
- Asda
- Tesco
- Sainsbury’s
- Aldi
- Lidl
We’ve worked it out that if you use this scheme you can save an average of £30 a year if you buy two bags with every weekly shop.
In order to get your bag replaced you will need to bring a previously visibly damaged bag for life into a store.
You will only get one replacement per damaged bag for life.
The Sun has also reached out to Morrisons as well to see if it will replace damaged bags for life and what steps customers should take.
What to do if a store refuses to replace a damaged bag for life
Several Facebook users commented they had often struggled to get damaged bags for life replaced.
One user said: “Meant to replace for free but quite a few places flat out refuse and tell you to buy a new one.
Another said: “They stopped doing this for a long while.”
These are the steps you should follow if this happens to you.
Aldi, Lidl and Asda bags for life state on the bottom of the bag, by the crease, that they can be replaced, show this to a senior member of staff if you are initially refused a replacement.
You can also quote the government website which states:
A returnable multiple-reuse bag must be all of the following:
- Sold for 10 pence or more
- Suitable for reuse
- Replaced free of charge if returned to you when worn out
Tesco said you should contact customer services if you still can’t get a replacement for a damaged bag for life.
We’ve asked Sainsbury’s and Lidl what to do if you’re refused and we’ll update this story when we hear back.
Remember many supermarkets also sell reusable bags and tote bags made out of even stronger materials.
These may cost up to £5 but they should last you longer than a standard bag for life.
