‘Oppenheimer’ could stop a ‘Barbie’ Grammys sweep with a win for Best Score
Grammy voting began on December 14 and lasts until January 4, so now is a better time than ever to see who the awards will likely honor. In the visual media categories, previous winners include iconic film scores and soundtracks like “A Star Is Born,” “The Sound of Music,” “Star Wars,” “The Greatest Showman,” “Frozen” and “La La Land.” So let’s take a look at this year’s race for Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media.
Nominees:
“Barbie”
“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”
“The Fabelmans”
“Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny”
“Oppenheimer”
John Williams is a perennial nominee here and a whopping 25-time Grammy winner, but “The Fablemans” and “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” didn’t make enough of a splash to win. Ludwig Goransson is also a double nominee here for “Wakanda Forever” and “Oppenheimer,” which could mean that he has a lot of passion and/or that his works will split with each other. That said, one could argue his “Oppenheimer” score is the clear standout of the two, especially considering that its current awards season campaigning will give it more press and that the movie was a huge success. “Oppenheimer” also received two more nominations for its piece “Can You Hear The Music”: Best Instrumental Composition and Best Arrangement, Instrumental or A Cappella. However, the Grammys really dig “Black Panther,” with the film receiving noms across the board in the visual media field this year. The first movie won this category as well, so voters might want to give the franchise a bookend.
There’s also “Barbie,” which could win for a couple of reasons. First, the score is by Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt, who are both liked by the academy, especially Ronson with his seven past trophies. But more importantly, we saw last year with “Encanto’s” visual media sweep that voters in this field aren’t scared to go all-in on a project they love. So, if voters go for “Barbie” in Best Visual Media Compilation and Best Visual Media Song, what’s stopping them from doing so here?
Will win: “Oppenheimer” (Ludwig Gorranson)
Could win: “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” (Ludwig Gorranson)
Dark horse: “Barbie” (Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt)
