Vanarama National League North
Hamish Arnold
Peterborough Sports climbed two places while Bishop’s Stortford stayed bottom of the Vanarama National League North table on Boxing Day, as the RDA Stadium visitors won 0-2. The Turbines have won five of their last six away games, while the hosts failed to build on their first away league win of the season on Saturday. The reverse fixture takes place on Saturday.
Hayden Cann volleyed wide in space at the back post from a deep free kick from the right side for the Turbines. Mbunya Alemanji and Osman Sow combined to tee up Riccardo Di Trolio for a cross, but it was blocked for a corner, from which Ryan Charles fired wide on his weaker foot. Ben Fowkes fired well over the bar from Michael Gash’s pass, before Pete Crook initially fumbled the ball from a corner, but grabbed it at the second attempt before Harry Beadle could apply the finishing touch. Di Trolio’s challenge on the halfway line won the ball back, and it landed at Sow’s feet, his through ball to Alemanji was overhit and Crook claimed the ball. The best chance of the half for Stortford fell to Sow, from Darren Foxley’s low cross, he forced a low save from Crook and Alemanji couldn’t convert the rebound.
HT 0-0
Beadle and Amadou Kassarate both saw shots blocked to win a corner from Foxley’s free kick, but the Turbines clear the danger, before Jack Giddens made a superb low save to deny Ben Fowkes who was unopposed at the back post to meet Dion Sembie-Ferris’ low cross from the right. The Blues made a double change before a deep free kick, which was headed across goal by Mark Jones, and Matthew Tottle found the bottom right corner with a half volley on the outside of his right foot. Giddens got down well to deny Jones from Sembie-Ferris’ flick on, before Foxley volleyed wide from a Kane Crichlow free kick which was cleared to the edge of the box. Di Trolio’s attempted through ball to Charles was intercepted by Tootle, who passed forwards to Sembie-Ferris in space on the Peterborough Sports right hand side, from the goal-line he chipped the ball across for substitute Jordan Nicholson to head home.
