Interesting Read - Program Tier Rankings
The Basketball Writers at the Athletic did an informal Tiering of Men's College Basketball Programs. They acknowledge this is a very subjective exercise that they literally dreamed up in a Chicago Bar a few weeks ago.
They opted to include what they call the Power 6 Teams, anyone outside that group that ranked in the top 80 of the KenPom Program ratings and any team that has won a National Title since 1980.
Ranking Criteria included Winning, Championships (league and national), brand appeal, recruiting prowess and the very subjective "overall vibe of the place". They basically came up with 5 Tiers (although Tier 1 is broken into 3 sub categories).
Dayton made Tier 4 which basically places us in the top 50. Each Tier is listed in alphabetical order so it's impossible to determine exact rankings. Some of the other programs in Tier 4 include Auburn, Creighton, Florida, Houston, Notre Dame, VCU, the School Down South and Wichita State.
Schools in Tier 5 include Butler, Georgia Tech, Miami, NC State, Oklahoma, Saint Mary's St. Johns, UNLV, USC, Virginia Tech, and Wake Forest.
Interesting read, but not a lot of context was provided for the individual rankings outside of Tier 1.
