‘It’s like the 90’s have thrown up over the shop’ Fashion fans are divided as River Island brings back diamanté jeans
IF you remember rushing to Tammy Girl to snap up high-waisted miniskirts, crop tops and chokers, then chances are you’re a 90’s kids.
And if you’ve visited your local River Island store in recent weeks, you’ll likely have had a major flashback…because they’ve brought back some old favourites – but this time, it’s left fashion fans divided.
In the clip posted to TikTok (@fluffycxbo), one woman can be seen visiting her local high-street shop and quips: “River Island is stuck in the 90’s…
“Okay, so shopping in River Island and my first thing is,
what the f***?”
She begins by sharing a close up video of a long-line black winter coat which has small white polka dots emblazoned across it.
“Like, what is this?” she asks.
Next up, she shows off a pair of blue wash jeans which feature diamante embellishments and are sure to make you centre of attention – but perhaps not for the right reasons, according to some.
She’s also horrified to stumble upon jeans with floral stitching up the side, along with a black vest top and beige jumper also covered in diamante embellishments.
Heading to the accessories section, the fashion whizz is then lost for words when she finds all of the handbags which feature the store’s logo emblazoned across the front and straps.
“I mean, I’m sorry, but since when’s River Island been a full on brand?” she questions.
“I mean, sorry, what?
“It’s been a while since I’ve been in here…as you can tell, we’re kind of back in the 90s.
“It’s kind of like the 90s has thrown up all over the shop.”
She captioned the post: “Wowww!!! I have no words – it’s like diamanté heaven!”
The video quickly went viral, garnering a whopping 267k views and hundreds of comments – with very mixed responses.
“I would definitely buy bags there if they didn’t have river island all over them,” commented one.
A second wrote: “90s retro is the current trend.”
The fashion fan replied: “Yeah but some things are meant to stay in the past lol.”
A third penned: “I’ve stopped shopping here, it’s gone crazy, I used to love it!”
Meanwhile, a fourth added: “This is because River Island think Gen Z and Alpha like 90s clothes, but I think they missed the point and instead just went full Etam/Tammy Girl.”
A fifth added: “I went in recently and honestly I was stunned…why does everything say River island on??”
However, another disagreed and argued: “River Island jeans are life, you can’t find better fitted jeans anywhere.”
And a further chimed in: “I love River Island, the sparkle is fab and the bags and accessories are lovely.”
