I’m mum-shamed for what I choose to eat and drink while pregnant – people frown but I’ve got cravings
A MUM-TO-BE has revealed that she gets mum-shamed for some of her dietary choices while pregnant.
But Haley Palve, who is 22-weeks pregnant, isn’t phased that her food preferences are “frowned upon”.
The 30-year-old still enjoys the caffeine from fizzy drinks, deli meat and runny egg yolks.
Too much caffeine and deli meat run a small risk of miscarriage, while runny egg yolks could give you salmonella while pregnant.
Haley dubbed them the “three things she still eats and drinks during pregnancy that are frowned upon”.
The Bachelor alum took to Instagram to share her controversial thoughts and was inundated with responses.
“I am not sure about this trend of not listening to doctors or believing science,” one person responded. “It’s literally like playing Russian Roulette with your baby’s health.”
“For someone who tried so hard to get pregnant I’m shocked you don’t care more about your unborn baby,” another penned.
According to the NHS, you can have caffeine while pregnant, but no more than 200mg per day.
“Regularly drinking more than this amount can increase your risk of pregnancy complications, such as low birthweight, and even miscarriage,” docs warned.
British mums-to-be can eat running egg yolks as long as they are British Lion hen eggs (which have a lion stamp on them) and hen eggs produced under the Laid in Britain scheme.
You should be careful with cold cured meats, such as salami, pepperoni, chorizo and prosciutto, unless they are cooked thoroughly.
This is because there’s a small risk of getting toxoplasmosis if you eat raw and undercooked meat, which can cause miscarriage.
Toxoplasmosis, caused by infected meat, does not usually cause any symptoms and most people do not know they’ve had it.
However, if it spreads to your baby, it can cause serious complications.
The NHS urges expectant mothers to avoid raw and uncooked meat, liver and liver products, all types of pâté and game meats.
After Haley’s post gained traction, her twin sister Emily, who recently gave birth to a little boy named Beckham, jumped to her defence.
“I ate all of these and drank caffeine my whole pregnancy,” she said. “Look at our sweet, beautiful Beckham now!
“I had a completely healthy pregnancy. You’re doing amazing, sissy.”
