The earthquake, measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale, shook the centre of Japan, “Ishikawa,” on the first day of the New Year.
According to reports, “the city of Wajima with a population of 27,000, located 500 kilometers from Tokyo and close to the epicenter, has been severely damaged with about 25 buildings destroyed, many of which were private homes.”
The Japanese government had previously warned of the possibility of earthquakes with a magnitude of seven or greater.
A large number of people are still trapped under the rubble, and there are warnings of an increase in the death toll from this incident.
Additionally, officials in Ishikawa have emphasized that more than 200 buildings in the central area of Wajima have caught fire, but the fires have now been controlled.
