High school sports roundup (Jan. 4)
Here’s a roundup of high school varsity action on Thursday, Jan. 4.
Girls basketball
Patterson Mill 59, Aberdeen 44: Jazmyn Kemp had 15 points and 15 rebounds and Morgan Hargrove had 18 points and two rebounds, but the host Eagles (3-6) fell to the Huskies (8-3). Patterson Mill has won six straight.
Fallston 52, Harford Tech 19: The host Cougars (7-3) beat the Cobras (2-4). Monday, Fallston will travel to Rising Sun and Tuesday Harford Tech travels to C. Milton Wright.
North Harford 40, C. Milton Wright 37: Payton Dinbokowitz made the game-winning 3-pointer with one second left to lift the visiting Hawks over the Mustangs. Dinbokowitz finished with 10 points and four steals. Caroline Nicholson added 17 points and eight rebounds for the Hawks. Natalie Barndt chipped in seven points. Emma Jankowiac had 16 points and seven rebounds for C.M. Wright. Sam Wolfkill added nine points and seven rebounds.
Edgewood 60, Rising Sun 53: Lilly Smeltzer was unstoppable inside, pulling down 18 rebounds to go with 11 points. Sam Donovan also had a double-double, finishing with 11 points and 10 rebounds, while also adding five assists. Jael Erickson scored 13 points and La’kel Davis chipped in 11.
Francis Scott Key 55, Century 25: Harli Hamlett scored eight points, but the visiting Knights (6-4) fell to the Eagles (6-2). On Tuesday, FSK travels to Westminster and Century hosts Manchester Valley.
Poly 56, Lake Clifton 13: Briana Pope scored 10 points and the host Engineers (4-0) beat the Lakers (1-2). Poly used timely offense and tough defense in the win. Both teams will face Edmondson-Westside next: the Engineers on Tuesday and Lake Clifton on Jan. 16.
Park 53, Chapelgate Christian 26: Sophie Zirkin scored a game-high 28 points to lead the visiting Bruins (3-5, 3-2 Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland C Conference) over the Yellow Jackets (3-10,1-7). Zirkin is averaging 24 points per game in league games this season.
Boys basketball
Harford Tech 77, North Harford 37: The host Cobras (2-7) used tough defense to limit the Hawks (1-7) to three points in the third quarter. Harford Tech was led by freshman Mateo Hiett with 19 points and Eric Macharia with 18 points.
Wrestling
Eastern Tech split a tri-meet, beating Kenwood, 45-36, but falling to Franklin, 40-33. A big win for the Mavericks came from 106-pounder Haley Sweatt in her match against Franklin. Ian Evans and Carter Davies each picked up two pins on the evening, while Anthony Gregory battled for two tough decision wins. Anthony Oge won both his matches to remain unbeaten on the season.
