As Heinz confirms their beloved treacle sponge pudding will never be coming back, here’s how to make your own at home
THEY confirmed this week that their beloved sticky treacle sponge pudding will never be returning to shelves.
And while shoppers around the country were left devastated by Heinz’s decision, it’s actually a lot easier than you may think to whip one up yourselves at home.
One home chef took to TikTok to share her simple recipe for “the quickest, easiest, tastiest pudding ever”.
“I’m making a syrup sponge which is so simple,” Oxford Girl Cooks said.
“Like a steamed sponge pudding but without the steaming.
“And it’s done in like 4 minutes.”
She began by adding four ounces of caster sugar and four ounces of baking spread to a bowl, before cracking in two eggs.
She then added five ounces of self-raising flour and a teaspoon of baking powder.
“I don’t bother sieving my flour, I just chuck it all in and it always works out fine,” she grinned.
She then added in a “splash of milk” before mixing it all together.
Once the mixture was ready, she transferred it to a glass bowl and popped it in the microwave for four minutes.
“It comes out like this and it looks so good,” she said as she held up the sponge to show viewers.
She then took out a huge spoon of the sponge, put it on a plate and drenched it with golden syrup.
“Just pour as much as you want on there!” she said.
She finished off the dessert with lashings of custard, before tucking in.
“And that is it,” she concluded.
“It’s super, like for an emergency dessert, if you haven’t got anything in, or you’ve ot people over or anything like that.
“So, so good!”
Earlier this week, baffled shopper Ann Thornton asked Heinz why it stopped making the Taste of Home Super Sticky Treacle Sponge Pudding.
Posting on Twitter, she said: “Why were the treacle and chocolate tinned steamed puddings discontinued?
“We miss them so much. None of the other available puds are as good.
“Please bring them back.”
A Heinz spokesperson said: “Sorry Ann, but there are no plans to bring them back I’m afraid.
Devastated fans paid tribute to the tinned pudding on social media.
One Reddit user said: “I wondered where those went! They were actually quite nice.
“Took ages to steam in a boiling pot or microwave, though.
Another said: “These used to be a godsend during hiking camps in the Scouts.”
