Meet 6 Golden Globes rookies who could hit home runs this Sunday
Every year, some breakout names emerge victorious at various awards groups on just their first nominations. Last year, Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan won Golden Globes for “Everything Everywhere All at Once” while Austin Butler also won on his first bid, for “Elvis.” This year, several performers are in with a good chance of following in these performers’ footsteps and triumphing on their first nominations, too. Here are the most likely to win.
Lily Gladstone — “Killers of the Flower Moon”
Lily Gladstone stars in Apple Original Films’ “Killers of the Flower Moon,” which tells the true story of the murders of Osage tribe members in the south of the USA in the 1920s. Gladstone demonstrates quiet power and searing intelligence in her heartbreaking role as Mollie Burkhart, who is one of the victims of the plan concocted by her husband (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his uncle (Robert De Niro). Gladstone is nominated for Best Drama Actress alongside Carey Mulligan (“Maestro”), Sandra Hüller (“Anatomy of a Fall”), Annette Bening (“Nyad”), Greta Lee (“Past Lives”), and Cailee Spaeny (“Priscilla”). Currently, we are predicting that Gladstone will win this category.
Da’Vine Joy Randolph — “The Holdovers”
Focus Features’ “The Holdovers” stars Paul Giamatti and Dominic Sessa as a teacher and student, respectively, who have to learn to put up with one another after they’re forced to stay at school for Christmas. While the two men are the heart of the film, Da’Vine Joy Randolph may just be the soul of the movie in her emotional turn as the school’s cook, who is mourning the loss of her son. Randolph delivers a breakout turn here and is nominated for Best Supporting Actress alongside Danielle Brooks (“The Color Purple”), Emily Blunt (“Oppenheimer”), Julianne Moore (“May December”), Jodie Foster (“Nyad”), and Rosamund Pike (“Saltburn”). We are predicting that Randolph is the easy winner here.
Steven Yeun — “Beef”
On to TV now. Netflix’s “Beef” follows two people caught up in a bitter feud that threatens to consume them and everyone around them after they end up in a road rage incident. Steven Yeun delivers an intense performer here as one half of the duo competing for revenge. He’s nominated for Best Limited Series/TV Movie Actor alongside Jon Hamm (“Fargo”), Matt Bomer (“Fellow Travelers”), David Oyelowo (“Lawmen: Bass Reeves”), Sam Claflin (“Daisy Jones and the Six”), and Woody Harrelson (“White House Plumbers”). Yeun is the heavy favorite to win this category.
Ali Wong — “Beef”
Yeun’s co-star Ali Wong is also the favorite to win Best Limited Series/TV Movie Actress. We think she will win ahead of fellow nominees Brie Larson (“Lessons in Chemistry”), Riley Keough (“Daisy Jones and the Six”), Juno Temple (“Fargo”), Rachel Weisz (“Dead Ringers”), and Elizabeth Olsen (“Love and Death”). Wong stars as the other half of the pair of road ragers who end up obsessed with destroying the other.
Aye Edebiri — “The Bear”
Ayo Edebiri features as the sue chef in Hulu’s acclaimed comedy “The Bear,” which follows Jeremy Allen White as a chef who returns home to run his family’s sandwich shop following the suicide of his brother. Edebiri is sharp, funny, and a starring light in the popular show and finds herself nominated for Best Comedy Actress alongside Quinta Brunson (“Abbott Elementary”), Natasha Lyonne (“Poker Face”), Selena Gomez (“Only Murders in the Building”), Rachel Brosnahan (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”), and Elle Fanning (“The Great”). We expect Edebiri to win.
Matthew Macfadyen — “Succession”
It’s perplexing that Matthew Macfadyen has never been nominated for a Golden Globe before given that he has three Emmy nominations and one victory to his name for “Succession.” He plays fan-favorite Tom Wambsgans in this HBO show about a family wrestling for control of a powerful media company after the patriarch steps down. He’s nominated here for Best Supporting TV Actor alongside James Marsden (“Jury Duty”), Ebon Moss-Bachrach (“The Bear”), Billy Crudup (“The Morning Show”), and “Succession” co-stars Alan Ruck and Alexander Skarsgård. We think that Macfadyen will reap rewards here and win his first Globe.
