Man arrested after allegedly robbing CT convenience store, shooting himself with gun

An East Haven man was arrested after allegedly robbing a New Haven convenience store and then going to a hospital for a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said.

Officers responded to reports of an armed robbery at Chico’s Fruit and Vegetables on Ferry Street just after midnight Tuesday. At the scene of the robbery, officers learned that gunshots were heard just after the suspect left the store, according to the New Haven Police Department.

Police reviewed surveillance footage and said they saw that the alleged suspect incurred a self-inflicted gunshot wound during, or just after, the robbery.

Shortly after the robbery was reported, officers were notified that a man had walked into Yale New Haven Hospital with a gunshot wound, according to police.

Investigators determined that the man, identified as 51-year-old Manuel Otero, “was responsible for the armed robbery,” police said.

Otero’s injury was not life-threatening and his condition was stabilized, according to police.

Otero is facing charges of first-degree robbery, conspiracy to commit first-degree robbery, criminal possession of a firearm, carrying a pistol without a permit, unlawful discharge of a firearm and reckless endangerment, police said.

He was also arrested on an outstanding warrant for failing to appear in court, according to police.
