Morning Joe cracks up at idea of Trump delivering his own closing argument
MSNBC's Joe Scarborough burst into laughter at Donald Trump's claim that he would deliver his own closing argument in his New York fraud trial.
The former president vowed to speak up for himself in the $370 million civil fraud trial later this week, days after his attorneys argued before a Washington, D.C., appeals court that he should be broadly immune from criminal prosecution, and the "Morning Joe" host could barely deliver that news without laughing.
"Look at that ABC News headline at the bottom of the screen, 'Trump will reportedly deliver' – I'm sorry, Trump – let me read it with a straight face," Scarborough said, fighting back a laugh. "It's not possible, it's not possible. 'Trump will reportedly deliver part of his New York fraud trial closing arguments himself.' The cable news gods, they rain manna down from the heavens to all cable news executive producers wondering what they're going to do. Forget cable news, the late-night comics – oh, my God, they'll have a field day on this."

George Conway agreed that Trump delivering closing arguments would be a media spectacle, but he said the former president had other motivations in speaking up for himself in court.
"There's a delay aspect to it and there's also a fundraising aspect to it, and, as Joe said, there's a narcissistic aspect, but he's fighting for his life here, his freedom here, these criminal cases, not the one in New York – that's just money, that means a lot to him," Conway said. "These cases could put him in jail for the rest of his life, and I think probably will. That's why he's desperate to make these immunity arguments, even though they're hail Marys, at best, but he's looking at and he deeply has to be fearing in fact he ran for re-election in 2020, in part, because he knows deep down he's criminal and that the law is catching up to him."
