At least 800 women being held in Taliban prisons
Simultaneously with increasing concerns about the detention of girls in Kabul, officials of the Taliban’s prison affairs have stated that there are currently a total of 19,000 prisoners across Afghanistan, of which approximately 800 are women.
Habibullah Badr, the deputy military head of the Executive Office of Taliban’s prison affairs, claimed on Tuesday, to media affiliated with the caretaker government (Taliban) that the number of female prisoners in Taliban’s prisons has decreased.
National Radio and Television, affiliated with the Taliban regime, reported that the total number of prisoners in prisons across Afghanistan currently stands at 19,000, with approximately 800 of them being women.
Contradictory statistics regarding the number of female prisoners in Taliban prisons have been released, each vastly differing from the others.
Mawlawi Mohammad Yusuf Mestri, the head of the Executive Office of Taliban’s prison affairs, had previously announced the detention and imprisonment of 32,000 individuals during the rule of their government in Afghanistan over two years.
This report from the Executive Office in August 2023 also indicates that at least 16,000 individuals are currently present in the prisons, with more than 2,000 of them being women and children.
This comes as the Taliban has launched a detention process for girls in various parts of Afghanistan and throughout Kabul for the past two weeks, detaining dozens of girls for what they call “inappropriate hijab.”
Habibullah Badr, the deputy military head of the Executive Office of Taliban’s prison affairs, has not provided any information about the identities of the women who are imprisoned in Taliban prisons.
