Editors 2024 SAG Awards nominations slugfest: Analyzing who’s in, who’s out and what it means for the Oscars [WATCH]
The 2024 SAG Awards nominations were announced on Wednesday, January 10. Gold Derby editors Denton Davidson, Marcus James Dixon, Daniel Montgomery and Ray Richmond were joined by Oscar Expert Tariq Khan to discuss who’s in, who’s out and what it means for the Oscars. Watch our lively slugfest above.
When it came to the biggest shock of the morning, “It has to be Mark Ruffalo missing for Best Supporting Actor, right?” asks Khan. Instead, the guild favored Ruffalo’s “Poor Things” co-star, Willem Dafoe. “I actually thought it would be the other way around,” he continues. “Mark Ruffalo had the showier, hammier performance and SAG eats that up. It’s funny, this happened the year of ‘Spotlight.’ The film got in for Best Cast and he missed out on an individual nomination. But ‘Spotlight’ won Best Cast. ‘Poor Things’ missed out on Best Cast. I still thought that Ruffalo would get in so that was a shock.”

While Davidson correctly predicted Sterling K. Brown would be nominated for “American Fiction,” he’s not sure it will translate to an Oscar nomination. “I mean, this is his 10th [SAG Awards] nomination,” Davidson explains. “He’s won four times, so I thought this is where he gets in. Now it’s interesting for the Oscars because if Willem has this support, and I still feel like Ruffalo has some support, I’m starting to lean towards putting them both in my Oscar predictions and maybe Sterling falls out of that.”
Richmond responds to the other major acting snub, Leonardo DiCaprio missing out for “Killers of the Flower Moon.” “I think he’s still going to get an Oscar nomination, but yeah, it was a surprise,” he confesses. “But you could tell that there was sort of a little bit of Leo snub in the air. It’s not totally shocking. I wasn’t shocked to see Charles Melton was snubbed for ‘May December.’ That was a little bit of a head scratcher for me to begin with. The fact that basically Willem Dafoe goes in and Melton goes out was not a shock. Yeah, Leo, I would put that in the mild surprise category. Not a huge surprise.”

“It was interesting. ‘Barbenheimer did the best this morning with the four nominations for ‘Barbie,’ four nominations for ‘Oppenheimer,’ so it really feels like Best Ensemble Cast will be the Cinematic and Box Office Achievement Award for the SAG Awards,” says Montgomery. “I’ve really got to think one of those films is on top to win, sorry, ‘Color Purple.’ I feel like if Fantasia [Barrino] had gotten in, I might be predicting ‘Color Purple’ to win Ensemble, but I feel like we’re looking at a situation where Danielle Brooks might be that film’s only nomination at the Oscars and there just doesn’t seem to be that much support for it.
While discussing the TV nominations, Dixon notes, “‘Succession’ has never won for a solo individual actor ever. Kieran Culkin would make history, so would Sarah Snook if she won. I think at this point I’m going to pick Pedro [Pascal], but we’ll see what happens at the Emmys in a couple days.”
The 29th annual SAG Awards, honoring the best movie and TV performances for the year 2023, will be handed out during a ceremony in Los Angeles on Sunday, February 24.
