KCRW-FM ends ‘Greater L.A.’ after 5 years as other staffers depart via buyouts in a budget crunch
KCRW-FM/89.9 will end the weekday news program “Greater LA” after a final show on Thursday, Jan. 11 as a result of budget deficits the Santa Monica public radio station continues to face.
About a dozen staffers at the station have also taken buyouts, though “Greater LA” host Steve Chiotakis will remain at KCRW in a different role.
“Tomorrow is our last show of ‘Greater LA,’ Chiotakis wrote on the social media platform X on Wednesday. “KCRW management is ending it after nearly five years. I am so grateful for the time we had, the wonderful people who helped put it together, and all the ears that listened. Thank you for everything!”
A statement released by the station said the cuts were necessary given the difficult media landscape today.
“These changes are hard, but also the best way to ensure KCRW can continue delivering on our mission in an increasingly competitive media environment,” read the written statement attributed to station management. “We are grateful to everyone who chose to take the opportunity to pursue a different path, and we are excited about the future of this great station.”
The Los Angeles Times reported that among the dozen of so leaving the station through buyouts are Anthony Valadez, co-host of the weekday music show “Morning Becomes Eclectic,” and Janaya Williams, KCRW’s afternoon host during National Public Radio’s “All Things Considered.”
“Greater LA” aired at 1:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday after the midday news program “Press Play.” Episodes were also available on podcasting platforms.
The show featured stories about life in Los Angeles from arts, entertainment and food to homelessness, transportation and the environment.
Its reporters will now provide stories for other KCRW and NPR programs, the Los Angeles Times reported.
“More to come about my shifting role at KCRW, but I wanted to give you a heads up about the future of GLA,” Chiotakis also posted on X. “I’m incredibly sad about the end, but honored by so much loyalty for our little show.
“And to the people who helped make it and put it together: nothing but love and admiration from me for your hard work and dedication. Thank you so much.”
