Sports Briefs: Archie gives Branson early scare before Bulls rally
Archie Williams jumped ahead of Branson early, but the shorthanded Bulls rushed back for a 65-57 victory Tuesday night. Finley Keeffe and Joaquin Aguillon each scored 13 points for Branson, while Jase Butler scored 11 points and DJ Armstrong had 10. TT Carr was absent from the lineup for the Bulls (12-5, 2-0 MCAL).
Sophomore Brian Wright led the Peregrine Falcons (8-8, 1-1) with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Owen Bugas finished with 17 points and six rebounds.
• Auvin Cole scored eight of his game-high 23 points in the third quarter as Tam powered past Terra Linda in the second half toward a 67-61 victory Tuesday night. The first half ended with the teams tied at 33, but Tam ran out to a 10-point lead in the third quarter, then held on to the win. Logan Raven scored 15 points for the Red-tailed Hawks (9-4, 2-0 MCAL) and Nabhi Abbushi added 11. Grady Bowers led the Trojans (9-8, 0-2) with 20 points and Chase Addelman added 18 points and six rebounds.
• Redwood won a tight game, 50-48, against San Rafael in a back-and-forth contest. Jake Vasquez had 18 points and 14 rebounds for the Giants (9-9, 1-1), while Brennan Woodley, Lachlan Kelly and Ian Rothbart each scored eight points.
• Joshua DeVore scored 14 points, but Novato could not rally past Windsor in a 44-29 non-league loss Tuesday.
Girls basketball
Archie Williams overcame a big night from Branson’s Avery Myerberg to edge the Bulls, 45-42, Tuesday evening. Lila Peterson led the Peregrine Falcons (6-12, 1-1) with 11 points, followed by Gia DeBok’s nine points and Allegra di Carpegna and Annabelle Freed, who scored eight points each. Myerberg scored a game-high 19 points for the Bulls (5-11, 0-2).
• Redwood defeated San Rafael, 59-26, Tuesday as sophomore Brooke Denler and freshman Julia Bayon scored 14 points each for the Giants. Denler pulled down eight rebounds and Gia Meyers had five rebounds. Sophomore Kitty White finished with 11 points and four rebounds for the Giants, who also got eight points from Ru Todd. Addie Gaw led the Bulldogs (7-8) with six points, followed by Luca Fondnazio with five points and Jessica Vara with four.
• Tam picked up some momentum as the Red-tailed Hawks rolled past Terra Linda, 63-22, on Tuesday. The Hawks (12-7, 1-1) who were coming off a double-overtime loss to San Marin in the MCAL opener on Jan. 5, are scheduled to face Novato on Friday.
• Novato used a fourth-quarter surge to rock Sonoma Academy, 52-35, in non-league action Wednesday. The Hornets (11-5, 1-0) are scheduled to play Tam on Friday.
Prep wrestling
Archie Williams’ John and Alex McKenzie were both 2-0 in Wednesday’s tri-meet with Redwood and Terra Linda.
Terra Linda was the benefactor of several individual forfeits as the Trojans went 2-0. Archie Williams defeated Redwood, 36-24, in their head-to-head matchup. Terra Linda’s Arthur Sepan (140) was 2-0 with a pin and a decision, and Angel Melende Diaz (115) was 2-0 with a pin and a forfeit win.
The Peregrine Falcons’ Alex McKenzie, ranked 29th in the state at 167 pounds, scored a pin at 159 pounds Wednesday against Terra Linda’s Alexis Arvizu, and at 167 pounds against Redwood’s Andrew Suko. John McKenzie, ranked 26th in the state at 152 pounds, pinned Redwood’s Jake Haravi and won a forfeit against the Trojans.
Redwood’s Hayden Schepps (140) pinned the Falcons’ Noah Bugbee and the Trojans’ Eric Jimenez, while the Giants’ Andre Garcia pinned the Trojans’ Ryan Younkin at 152 pounds and the Falcons’ Carter Cain at 159 pounds.
