I got mum-shamed at playgroup when I asked for a coffee – the endless questions left me totally shocked
A WOMAN has revealed that she was mum-shamed at a playgroup for asking for a coffee.
Yvette, a mum-of-two from Australia, explained that another parent began to ask her endless amounts of questions and gave her multiple suggestions after she confessed her desire for some caffeine.
Opening up about the ordeal online, Yvette shared a short clip on social media, sharing the incident.
She confessed: “I got mum-shamed today. I went to a playgroup today, which I haven’t been to since I had my son.
“I just took my daughter today and people were asking ‘how did it go’ etcetera and everyone was super lovely and welcoming, you know, very kind.
“I mentioned I really wanted a coffee and one woman there in particular was like ‘ah, so you’re not breastfeeding?’. I was like ‘I am breastfeeding’.
“She was like, ‘you’re having decaf right?’ and I’m like, ‘I’m not having decaf, I’m having proper coffee’.”
But that’s not all, as the woman continued to ask Yvette questions about her desire to have a coffee, as she added: “She was so concerned by me having a coffee and was like, ‘doesn’t that affect your babies’ sleep and stuff like that?’. I haven’t noticed.
“She was like, ‘you’re having a really weak one right?’. She was really concerned about me having a coffee.
“I think if I had realised to start off with, I would’ve been like, ‘p**s off’, but I was really shocked by it.
“Anyway, I had my coffee and she’s an absolute k**b.”
Yvette later wrote: “I think pushing it with multiple questions and suggestions was the issue.”
The TikTok clip, which was posted under the username @le_yvette, has clearly left many shocked, as it has amassed 124,400 views.
Social media users could relate to Yvette’s awkward experience and many took to the comments to express this.
One person said: “This is why I don’t do mum groups.”
Another added: “Someone at a mothers group asked me if I was worried I was going to give my baby diabetes because I was demand feeding him, people are wild.”
A third commented: “The coffee comments annoyed me so much. I’m still breastfeeding my 20 month old and I have 1-2 cafe coffees a day and never cared!”
Meanwhile, someone else claimed: “2-3 cups of coffee, is considered safe to consume while breastfeeding!”
According to the NHS, there’s not enough information to say how much caffeine is too much, and babies respond to caffeine differently. But it’s a good idea to reduce how much caffeine you drink, especially when your baby is less than 6 months old.
If you’re breastfeeding, it’s recommended that you have no more than 200mg a day. This may include one mug of coffee, tea, cola or energy drink.
