The 3 mistakes you’re making with your dehumidifier and why you should never place it next to a wall
IT’S the device that everyone’s been buying recently.
And while dehumidifiers can be a brilliant way to deal with condensation and mould, there are some mistakes you can make that make them less effective.
One such error is putting the machine next to a wall.
Sarah Dempsey, cleaning expert at MyJobQuote.co.uk, explained that you need to keep the dehumidifier at least 20cm away from the wall to get the “best results” out of it
And don’t put it next to any windows, doors or air vents, as putting it next to a draught also makes it less effective.
The best place to put it is “just outside of the bathroom.
“Leave the bathroom door open to help reduce air moisture quickly,” Sarah added.
“Place the dehumidifier close to the area where there is the most moisture while also ensuring there is enough airflow around the machine for it to work effectively.
“Another thing it’s important to do is to regularly clean the filter.
“Dehumidifiers work by pulling the air inside over and over to dry it out,” Sarah told Express.co.uk.
“Often, other things will also enter the dehumidifier such as dust and pet hair. This will build up over time and can cause clogs inside the system.
“Check the filter regularly and clean it with a damp cloth. Wait for the filter to dry before placing it back in the machine.”
And it’s not just the filter you should be cleaning either – the entire water machine should get a spring clean every now and then.
“Remove all of the accumulated dirt from the filter and coils by scrubbing in and up and down motion with a soft bristle brush,” Sarah said.
“Spray the coils with your vinegar spray mixture and leave it to settle for a few minutes.
“Then, pour some lukewarm water over the coils to wash this away. Be sure to cover the motor to prevent any water from getting into that area.
“Clean the fan blades by wiping them with a damp cloth to remove all of the dirt and dust.”
To finish off, use a hoover to vacuum the inside of the machine before putting it all back together.
