SAG film nominations forum reactions: Cheers for Penélope Cruz, jeers for ‘May December’ snubs
Once the 2024 Screen Actors Guild Award nominations were announced, our forum posters (many of whom are Hollywood insiders shielded by quippy aliases) let loose with their thoughts on the included and excluded performances. When it came to the feature film rosters, folks were particularly chagrined over the Best Actress omissions of Golden Globe nominees Sandra Hüller (“Anatomy of a Fall”) and Greta Lee (“Past Lives”). They were also quite taken aback by the complete “May December” shutout and took to arguing at length over its updated Oscars chances. In truth, these nominations didn’t trigger much positive celebration, but many users did glean joy from the surprise inclusion of “Ferrari” supporting actress Penélope Cruz.
Below is just a sampling of our readers’ savage SAG Awards reactions regarding the nominees in the six film categories. Take a look, then join the conversation if you dare. The film and TV winners will be revealed live on Netflix on February 24. Gold Derby’s predictions center is open, so make your first picks right now.
BEST ENSEMBLE
eddie: Well, SAG chose the most basic and boring nominees possible.
Naiad Lyne: “Poor Things” kinda tanked here.
1LuckyLady: No “Saltburn,” “Past Lives,” “May December” (thank God)!!
Flickchick: I’m surprised “The Holdovers” missed. Strange to see the “Barbie” strength here after it got clobbered at the Golden Globes just days ago.
SnookTheWay: After last year’s “EEAAO” sweep, SAG said that’s enough Asian representation.
BEST ACTOR
WordsDon’tComeEasy: Zac Efron is truly done. The buzz came way too late.
xohours: I had a feeling Leonardo DiCaprio would miss but didn’t think it’d actually happen.
Stank83: DiCaprio being snubbed like this when everything else around “Killers of the Flower Moon” got in doesn’t make any sense.
Nate: I am so relieved that Colman Domingo made it in, as I was worried his chances were fading.
BEST ACTRESS
abelfenty: Greta Lee ROBBED.
Batmanforever: NO SANDRA HULLER. NO GRETA LEE. What are these nominations?! The Golden Globes were so much better.
1LuckyLady: The Huller snub stinks but was expected.
evilstyless: Annette Bening over Sandra Huller or Greta Lee. Really?
PreludeinCSharpMinor: Sorry, as an actor, what Annette Bening had to do for “Nyad” goes way above what Greta Lee had to do in “Past Lives.”
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
Marcus Snowden: CHARLES MELTON SNUBBED.
xohours: How do you nominate Willem Dafoe and not Mark Ruffalo?
DanC: No Charles Melton BOOOOOOOO.
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
SnookTheWay: AMERICA FERRERA DIDN’T HAPPEN! YESS.
Judy: Boring Ferrera is done.
Atypical: Penelope Cruz. The utter serve. AHHHHH!
Archie Leach: PENELOPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
jadon: Taste! Never bet against thespian Penelope. She will forever have both Hollywood and international cinema’s support.
laslo: Jodie Foster hitting every single precursor so far is a surprise to me. She’s stronger than I have given her credit for.
Keth: Happy for Bening and Foster – I thought both were terrific in “Nyad.”
BEST STUNT ENSEMBLE
evilstyless: “Barbie” in Stunts? LOL
ejaru1810: “Barbie” in Stunts is plain bad.
abelfenty: Oh, they’re really going bananas for “Barbie.”
