We bought an old white van and turned it into our dream tiny home – we save £800 a month that we would’ve spent on rent
MOST of us have dreamed about travelling the world, but can’t imagine how we’d fund it.
One couple has decided to go on the ultimate road trip though, transforming an old white to their dream tiny home – and spend less than most people pay in rent.
Its funny how much can change in a year, with Laura, her partner Luke and their dog Luna now travelling across Europe full time.
Having dreamt of life on the open road, the couple made the ambitious decision to convert an old 2019 Peugot Boxer, aka the classic white van, into a tiny home.
Rather than outsourcing the task, they worked tirelessly over the next month to makeover the vehicle doing everything from fitting windows to installing solar panels.
The first few cold months of 2023 were filled with sourcing insulation, which the couple fitted, as well as electrics to power their dream life.
As well as adding essentials like a shower and sink, they worked around the clock to make the new home cosy adding natural wood to make the interior cosy.
Not content with this, they even installed a solid double bed and cabinets to make sure their make shift campervan felt like a true home from home.
Whilst the renovation took over nine months, Luke and Laura were finally able to hit the open road in the last few months of the year.
Initially exploring the UK, they taken the road less travelled and are now soaking up winter sun in the south of France.
They aren’t planning to make the journey home any time soon either, as their dream tiny home costs less than most people pay in rent.
In addition to regular vlogs about their daily life, Laura broke down just how much the couple spend in a regular basis – and its surprising just how little it costs them.
With the average UK rent costing £868 per month, the couple could be paying nearly £1800 a month for them to rent a place together.
Though they didn’t reveal whether they had saving to help spread the costs, the influencers did reveal that they spend £396 per month in fuel – despite driving virtually every day.
Even with the exchange rate to take into account, essentials like food, gas and water cost them just £210 per month which is unimaginable to most Brits.
This is because the campervan couple make us of facilities on offer at the various camping site they stay at, topping up their water tank whenever they can.
Their electric is even free of charge, thanks to them installing solar panel before departing the UK.
However, some expenses are unavoidable with food and insurance for their beloved dog Luna costing roughly £40.
Without a washing machine, laundry will often cost them another £30 – despite the couple washing items on campsites.
Subscriptions like Netflix and internet also add another £140 to their monthly budget, but are essential for long rainy nights in the van.
For those that haven’t done the maths, it means Luke and Laura spend on average £811 per month to live life in the fast lane.
As rents climb in the UK, with the avergae London pad costing over £2000 per month, we are pretty tempted to up sticks too.
