I quit my job to be a WAG – trolls tell me to go back to work but husband makes so much money, it doesn’t make sense
A WAG has revealed that she faces criticism for quitting her job to support her husband’s football career.
Chanen Johnson tipped that her husband makes around £40,000 for every game he plays, so there’s “literally no point” in her picking up a 9-5.
The 27-year-old is married to Juwan Johnson, also 27, with the pair tying the knot in 2020 after meeting at university.
He plays for New Orleans Saints of the US’ National Football League (NFL), while Chanen is a stay-at-home mum for their seven-month-old daughter.
“If you’re in the NFL, you’re in a certain tax bracket which means you pay a lot of taxes,” she explained in a TikTok video.
“If you are married to an NFL player and you file your taxes together, you’re gonna pay the same taxes too.”
That’s because in the US, citizens work out their taxes themselves – compared to the UK where it is mostly done automatically by HMRC.
Married couples, like Chanen and Juwan, typically work out their taxes as a pair to receive some benefits.
But with Juwan’s net worth sitting at $12 million, Chanen says that half of his earnings go to taxes – and thus hers would too.
She added that whatever “normal” job she did, she would be making annually how much her husband makes for playing in half of an American football game.
“Literally, there is no point,” she said.
“We are better off as a couple having me be at home and handling all the other 99% of the factors in the relationship.
“He can handle the one… which is making money.”
As Chanen shares snippets into their lives on social media, she has been subject to criticism.
Trolls have told the mum-of-one her to “get a job” – but she has no plans on listening to them.
“One thing I’m not gonna do is work an entire job, for an entire year, just to make some people on the internet happy,” she said.
“So that it looks like I’m doing something with my life.”
The couple also plan on having more children that Chanen doesn’t want to have to “hire somebody else” to help her raise while she works.
