'Brace yourself': CNN digs into epic fact-check after Trump's rambling speech
After Donald Trump's legal team finished closing statements in the former president's $370 million civil fraud trial, their client took to the airwaves to address the public. CNN anchor Brianna Keilar tuned into the lengthy speech and told her viewers to get ready for an equally lengthy fact check.
"Brace yourself," Keilar said. "Because this is going to take a moment."
Keilar shredded Trump's assertion that New York Attorney General Letitia James was conducting a political witch hunt at the behest of President Joe Biden.
"He was saying that this is a Joe Biden indictment and it's not," Keilar said. "It's a civil fraud trial in New York, Joe Biden did not set this up."
Keilar then took umbrage with Trump's lawyer Alina Habba claiming that real estate "is an art, not a science," noting "there's also math."
"The thing about math is it's pretty clear cut and he got it wrong," she said.
Co-host Boris Sanchez dug into legal interpretations.
"The former president also made the case that his argument won in the court of appeals, and the judge, Arthur Engoron, is ignoring that because it's not the result he wants," Sanchez continued. "That's actually a misrepresentation of what took place."
Sanchez then explained the Court of Appeals had simply scaled back James' initial case.
"It's false," CNN legal analyst Elliot Williams confirmed of Trump's claim. "And It's almost sad."
Paula Reid contributed to conversation from outside the civil court room to discuss Trump's contention that the case was a political hit job.
"There really is no evidence to support this idea that this is election interference," she said.
