ESPN Gives Significant Hint At Chicago Bears’ Likely QB Plans

GM Ryan Poles was adamant that his decision at quarterback was anything but settled. While he liked the progress Justin Fields made in 2023, the Chicago Bears ended up with the #1 overall pick in the draft for a second consecutive year. That means Poles could have his choice of any QB in the class. It is a golden opportunity. He plans to do his due diligence, studying and meeting with every prospect. That is the correct approach for any general manager worth his salt. The obvious question is whether the organization already has at least an inkling of what it will do.

Jeremy Fowler of ESPN has continued to show credible info on the Bears’ situation over the past few weeks. He gave an update on SportsCenter. Fields made a strong enough impression to make any decision at quarterback difficult. Teammates love him. Many feel poor coaching contributed to his lack of progress as a passer. However, this time feels different. Some inside Halas Hall have a feeling Poles will end up making the change, either with Caleb Williams or somebody else at #1 overall.

This wouldn’t be a surprise by the Chicago Bears.

Nobody disputes Fields’ efforts to improve. The progress is there, but two inescapable facts remain. His contract is reaching a point where it’s about to become way more expensive. Also, and this is still a vital point, Poles didn’t draft him. Every GM who inherits an unproven quarterback almost always ends up moving on. It is always about waiting for the right opportunity. Poles couldn’t ask for a better one. He holds the #1 pick, and the 2024 class appears to be one of the stronger versions in recent years.

The only question left for the Chicago Bears is to pinpoint their guy. Most experts remain fixed on Williams being the top prospect. His three years of college are littered with examples of brilliance. However, he has competition. Drake Maye is much more the NFL prototype with his 6’4 frame and rocket arm. Jayden Daniels is also rapidly ascending after his Heisman win, showcasing his electric dual-threat ability. Interviews will take place over the next two months. Poles will likely have his answer by the beginning of March.
