Capital Roots helps small start-ups get up and running
TROY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — Capital Roots is a non-profit that has worked to make fresh, healthy food accessible to the community for the last 50 years. It has taken on a new mission, assisting entrepreneurs who are looking to grow their business.
Jaclyn Metz left her corporate job to pursue her passion, growing and eating hot peppers.
“Even though I really enjoyed having the stability, I know how motivated we are as a family. I know how much great support I have and it led me to take the plunge,” said Metz.
Jaclyn and her husband Justin started Morning Pine Acres out of their home. It started with their own microfarm, making artisanal products like pepper jelly, hot sauce, fresh jalapeno salsa and bloody mary mix. She said it was scary but it’s been a great ride.
“We definitely would not be where we are without Capital Roots,” said Jaclyn.
The organization helped them expand their business by providing a commercial kitchen they can rent space in and can access 24/7.
“Instead of having to use small pots and pans and do things several times, I can utilize one giant pan and make a lot more product, a lot more quickly,” said Metz.
According to Capital Roots CEO Amy Klein, they offer support that goes beyond a well-equipped commercial kitchen space.
“In addition to that, all the wrap-around services that they need to be successful in their food based business,” said Klein.
And that kind of education and support is important to Metz at this stage in her business. She said they’ve learned a lot along the way, with the help of the organization.
“If I ever have a question, being a new business owner, I can reach out to Capital Roots and they can assist me and point me in the right direction,” said Metz.
Although Morning Pine Acres does not have exact numbers yet, they’ve been officially doing business for just over a year, Jaclyn said they have good margins and anticipate they’ll be expanding their business.
“It was scary and it was a lot of tasting and a lot of failed things but a lot of successes and we’re definitely moving forward and we’re going to grow a lot this year,” said Metz.
The next step for Jaclyn and Justin? More store shelves. Their products are already in the Capital Roots Good Food Market.
