Firefighter falls off roof of Columbus home on fire
COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) -- A Columbus firefighter was injured Monday night while fighting more than one house fire.
Columbus Division of Fire Chief Jeffrey Geitter confirmed to NBC4 that emergency crews took one firefighter to Grant Medical Center after he fell off the roof of a home, located near Genessee Avenue and Greenwich Street. Flames spread from an initial home where the fire started around 8 p.m. to a second home.
The firefighter was attempting to drill a hole into the second house to fumigate it and help combat the fire. However, he then slipped off the roof and fell onto an overhang before landing on the ground.
"Our crew members went to that roof of the building next door," Geitter said. "While they were operating there, one of the firefighters slipped and fell from that roof."
The roof was missing multiple shingles, but CFD said weather may have also played a role in the firefighter's fall. The firefighter remained conscious through the incident, and the division said his injuries seemed to be minor.
CFD said no one was inside either home at the time of the fires. Geitter noted the first house, which had caught on fire for the second time, was now a total loss. Both fires were extinguished in about 20 minutes, Geitter said.
