Property tax credits available for seniors, veterans in Harford County

Applications for Harford County’s property tax credit for qualifying senior citizens and veterans in fiscal 2025 are due by April 1, according to a news release for Harford County Executive Bob Cassilly.

This credit is available to homeowners with a property assessed at $600,000 or less who meet specific criteria, according to the release:

  • Aged 65 or older and have lived in their home for at least 35 years.
  • Aged 65 or older and retired from the United States Uniformed Services, or the surviving spouse who has not remarried.
  • U.S. veteran of any age with a permanent service-connected disability rating that is at least 50% and substantially limits one or more major life activities, or their surviving spouse who has not remarried.
  • The surviving spouse (who has not remarried) of a U.S. Uniformed Service member killed in action.

Renewal applications were sent to eligible households on Jan. 12. Residents who received the credit in the past and didn’t receive a renewal application by Jan. 29 or if the information is incorrect, contact the Harford County Department of the Treasury at 410-638-3450.

New applicants for the property tax credit for the fiscal year starting on July 1, can access eligibility requirements, instructions and applications on the county website here, the release said. Citizens also can print applications from the county website or pick them up at the Harford County Department of the Treasury window at 220 S. Main Street in Bel Air, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Information about the tax credit is available at Harford County’s senior centers, on social media, and at all 11 branches of Harford County Public Library, according to the release. Those who need assistance with the application should call the Harford County Department of the Treasury at 410-638-3450.

To apply for the tax credit, submit a signed copy of the completed application and related eligibility documents by April 1. Residents can mail applications to Harford County Government, Department of the Treasury, Attn. Tax Credit; P.O. Box 609, Bel Air. Applications also can be hand-delivered to the treasury window during business hours or dropped in the after-hours drop boxes outside the building before the deadline.

“Qualified Harford County residents can receive this credit for up to 20 years. If you’re a newly eligible senior or veteran, I encourage you to apply and reach out to our staff if you need help,” Cassilly said in the. release.
