‘Nicer than 87% of most apartments’ people praise mum as she transforms garage into a tiny home for daughter for £1k
A WOMAN has revealed that she converted her garage into a tiny home for her daughter.
Stacey Sullivan, who is from the US, explained that thanks to some help from her friends, it cost just her £1,180 on materials to transform the once storage space into a cosy living area.
The savvy mum took to social media to show off the budget garage renovation, as she explained: “Garage to apartment. Kitchen and bathroom will be added to the other side.”
As she showed off her garage, prior to its overhaul, she said: “My daughter had to move back home. So, we converted our garage into a small apartment.”
The garage, which was once filled with a variety of items, including motorbikes and tyres, was then transformed into a small living space for Stacey’s daughter.
Stacey shared a close-up look during the renovation process, as insulation was added and beams were put in place to create separate rooms.
The garage was then painted and a carpet was laid, to make the space feel more like a home.
Shortly after, Stacey showed off the finished space – complete with a bed, a sofa and a TV.
There was also soft furnishings, plants and pictures, as well as a mirror and a rug, to add to the homely feel of the once dumping ground.
Stacey later explained that she, along with some friends, were able to do the work themselves, meaning that they only had to pay for materials.
The TikTok clip, which was posted under the username @staceysullivan0, has clearly left many shocked, as it has quickly racked up 171,200 views.
Social media users were impressed with the cheap DIY makeover and many took to the comments to express this.
One person said: “Damn, my parents won’t even let me sleep on their couch.”
Another added: “So cute!”
A third commented: “This is amazing!”
Whilst another user beamed: “Ummm that’s nicer than 87% of the apartments where I live!!”
Meanwhile, someone else asked: “How much do you think this would cost? I’m poor but I would like to do this for my daughter.”
To this, Stacey confirmed: “Totally get it! Thankfully, me & friends were able to do the work ourselves so we just paid for materials. It cost us about $1,500 [£1,180].”
At the same time, another user wondered: “Does it have a bathroom?”
To this, Stacey explained: “Bathroom and kitchen are being added in spring. We live in the north, so we have frozen ground.”
While many of us use our garage to store junk, it might just be time to think again.
A garage conversion is a relatively low-cost way of increasing your living space, because unlike an extension, you don’t need to pay for laying new foundations or building new walls.
It has been estimated that the cost of converting the average garage into a liveable room, ranges between £5,000 and £7,000.
But if you can’t afford to splash the cash and get your garage property converted, don’t worry, you won’t need planning permission if you fancy doing it yourself.
According to Redbridge Council, most garage conversions can be completed under permitted development rights, particularly if you are not planning to alter the structure of the building.
However, you should still make sure to check that there are no planning conditions attached to the garage, particularly if you live in a new build property, listed building or Conservation Area.
Not only will turning your once wasted space garage into a useful room, but it could also add value to your property too.
Virgin Money estimated that converting your garage into an en-suite bedroom could add 20% to the value of your home, making this a cost-effective way of increasing your living space.
