Republicans may lose George Santos' seat in special election: reporter
Politico reporter Emily Ngo called the suburban New York district "Democrats' to lose" days ahead of the special election to fill former Rep. George Santos' (R-NY) seat.
Polls show the two candidates very close, with the Democrat slightly above but still within the margin of error.
"Republicans in this area boasted impressive ground game," Ngo explained on MSNBC. "This district has been turning red seat by local seat over the past year. As much as it might be a bellwether for November in the presidential election, then, it may stand apart from other suburbs, affluent suburbs around New York state, and around the country."
Political analysts are seeing it as a kind of litmus test for 2024 as Republicans worked to tie Democratic former Rep. Tom Suozzi to President Joe Biden.
Republican Mazi Melesa Pilip, an Ethiopian-born former Israeli army soldier, has her own uphill battle, facing off in the debate over a woman's right to choose. Pilip, who purports to be pro-life hedged, claims she believes the decision should be left up to each individual. It comes as some Republicans are pressing for a national ban on abortion access and other states are seeking even more restrictions.
"It is protected," in New York, Ngo explained, "but the threat to abortion access nationwide does have an implication here in the state. Mazi Pilip said she is pro-life, but she believes it is a woman's choice."
Pro-choice people believe it should be up to the individual to decide.
"She would not press her personal views and other people that she is against a nationwide ban on abortion, but she has not said whether she supports Codify Roe v. Wade," Ngo said. "She has the support of the conservative party. Their views are troublesome on abortion as well. This is an issue, but it may not be the top issue."
