NFL Exec Knows Why Caleb Williams Is Already Cemented As Bears’ Target
People are struggling to understand the timetable. One would think the Chicago Bears aren’t set on their quarterback decision this early in the off-season. The draft isn’t until April. There is still lots of evaluating left to do. That includes the all-important interviews at the scouting combine and private visits. Yet, from every notable insider of late, it sure sounds like Ryan Poles and the organization have made up their minds. Caleb Williams is going to be the pick. The interviews over the next few weeks are more of a formality.
Some people are left wondering why. Plenty of analysts out there think Drake Maye and Jayden Daniels deserve strong consideration for going first. Even Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy seems to be picking up steam. This can’t all be pre-draft hype propping up quarterbacks, right? Well, Dan Graziano of ESPN is hearing it’s precisely that. One executive said the reasoning for the Bears’ quick decision isn’t from cutting corners and not doing their homework.
It’s because Williams is that much better than the other options available.
I’m not sure I’ve talked to one single scout or executive who doesn’t think Chicago should keep the pick and draft Caleb Williams at No. 1. As one high-ranking personnel exec said, “There’s Caleb and then a pretty big gap.”
The Bears see Caleb Williams as the best option.
That is what it comes down to. Everybody knows he has the physical traits. He’s mobile, accurate, has a big arm, and displays some of the most jaw-dropping improvisational skills seen since Patrick Mahomes. Chicago has likely spent months doing heavy research into what he’s like as a person. Is he a leader? Are there any off-the-field concerns? How strong is his work ethic? It appears they’ve gotten lots of positive answers on all fronts. Now, they will meet him in person to see how well he and the coaches can mesh.
There is still the outside chance that Caleb Williams will go rogue and try to avoid coming to Chicago. That has been a persistent rumor. Still, there are no signs he is prepared to cross that Rubicon. If the Bears draft him, it’s apparent he will come to the team willingly. Everybody knows this organization’s track record. Developing quarterbacks hasn’t been their thing for a long time. That doesn’t mean this time will be like all the others. They’ve built a solid structure. If Williams is as good as many believe, he has a chance to be special.
