Three ways to dry wet washing ‘faster’ and the room to ‘avoid’ having your airer in or risk mould and damp
WHETHER you are hiding your airer in the hallway, your bathroom or even your bedroom, it is difficult to know where is best to dry your clothes.
If you are struggling with winter washing, experts have revealed the best rooms to dry your clothes in no time at all – and avoid mould.
Though you might think it won’t make that much of a difference, laundry is all about location, location, location.
Rather than keeping your clothes where you can see them, home insurer Admiral recommends airing wet washing in rooms that you spend the least amount of time in.
This is because extra moisture from your washing can increase the risk of damp and mould, especially in rooms without the right ventilation.
Alarmingly, drying laundry indoors can cause moisture levels to rise by up 30 per – according to recent research conducted by Professor David Denning at the University of Manchester.
If left untreated, mould and damp can cause serious health issues such as respiratory disease, asthma or increased allergies.
For those that are drying clothes indoors, avoid drying your washing in your bedroom as this is where we spend the majority of our time at home.
Whether you are working from home or binge watching TV, the living room should also be avoided for this reason too.
Whilst rooms like the kitchen offer good ventilation and tend to be used less, you still run the risk of your clothes picking up odours from cooking.
This is why the home insurer recommends spaces like the bathroom, as which is where you will typically spend the least amount of time in.
It also has the added benefit of good airflow, with extractor fan helping to whip away any lingering moisture left over from your laundry.
Garages and hallways also offer a good alternative drying area, especially if you don’t have a dining room or laundry room.
For fast drying laundry though, Admiral recommends letting your washing dry in the spare room – away from the rest of the house.
Not only will it be out of your way, you can speed up drying times by opening the window and let air circulate around the room.
If you are still stuck for spaces to dry your washing, don’t despair as the homes expert has plenty of hacks to get your washing away – without central heating.
The easiest way to speed up drying is to add an extra spin cycle at the end of every load, as this will help remove any extra moisture.
If you do have a bit of extra cash to spend on household essentials, Admiral advises investing in a heated airer as this is a more cost effective than using a tumble dryer.
You can even pick up one for less than £50, as Argos has reduced the cost to just £44 in their sale.
For those really struggling with mould and damp though, it might be time to buy a dehumidifier which will help remove any lingering moisture faster.
