Albany Rescue Mission hosts big game party for the homeless
ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -Capital City Rescue Mission has been welcoming those in need to celebrate the Super Bowl for more than a decade. Almost 200 people gathered to share a meal while cheering on their favorite team.
"America is about a celebration. We celebrate Christmas, Thanksgiving, New Year’s Day, and the Fourth of July… But the homeless need to celebrate too and they need to know that they’re a part of us," said Pastor and Executive Director, Perry Jones.
Jones says now more than ever, celebrations are needed to help everyone get by. "Homelessness is on the rise and there’s a lot of cause for that, but they’re here. We also have programs not for the emergency shelter, but for recovery and transition."
Organizers say the Super Bowl is an easy way to bring everyone together to not only enjoy a warm meal, but socialize over something positive instead of their hardships.
"People share their stories here, their journeys. I think for me to be a voice, I need to hear from everyone that I represent," explained Representative Paul Tonko.
Volunteers say no matter what time wins, it's amazing to see how this annual watch party can boost the spirits of everyone in the room.
"That sense of normalcy I think is a part of getting folks back on their feet. Lending support, Lending a hand," described Legislator Dustin Reidy.
"I’m here to eat something because I screwed up in my life. It’s very sad, but I’m here," stated Mauricio Miguel Martinez.
