'Sad and pathetic' Comer can't admit he lost key anti-Biden 'informant': Obama adviser
Rep. James Comer (R-KY) has the Republican Party's impeachment probe into Joe Biden is effectively dead, but he still can't admit it's because their only "informant" stands accused of lying to the FBI, a former Obama Administration staffer quipped Tuesday.
Alexander Smirnov has been indicted on charges he lied about the former vice president receiving a $5 million bribe through his son Hunter, which MSNBC host Alicia Menendez called a "major blow" to Republicans.
"You have Republicans really sort of banking on his testimony and being the basis of their impeachment inquiry into the president," she said. "Now you have Congressman Comer playing down their reliance on him, claiming in a statement that the impeachment is, 'based on a large record of evidence, including bank records and witness testimony, revealing that Joe Biden knew of and participated in his family's business dealings."
Menendez explained what she felt was the ultimate motivation of the impeachment probe.
"What they wanted to do was say 'a pox on both your houses,'" she said. "At a minimum, what it did was inoculate the very reasonable and very evidence-based attack on Trump that he's dangerous to democracy."
Jim Messina, former White House deputy chief of staff for former President Barack Obama, chastised Comer for his failure to address the indicted elephant in the room.
"Comer didn't talk about the fact that his own witness just fell apart," said Messina. "He can't even admit that. And that's the sad and pathetic thing."
Meanwhile, said Menendez, "The House has done a historic amount of nothing in this Congress. They haven't passed anything. They have been doing crazy things like this."
Messina joked that "to be fair," the GOP did hold a lot of votes for Speaker of the House.
