I did a council house swap but it turned into a move from hell – it was disgusting & there was a big hole in the ceiling
A WOMAN has claimed that she has experienced a council house swap from hell.
Becky Evans, 27, revealed that not only was the home left in a total state, with mess and rubbish everywhere, but there was even a huge hole in the ceiling too.
Council house tenants are able to switch their house to another rented council property, if the other person agrees, but Becky was left in disbelief when she looked around her new pad.
Posting on social media, Becky gave her followers a look around the council house that she moved into, as she wrote: “Council house swap from hell.”
In the short clip, Becky gave her followers a close-up look at the state of the home – from dirt all over the walls to mess covering the floors.
Not only this, but she claimed there was “random c**p” left everywhere, and it was clear that the “dirty old-fashioned tiles” and walls, which had wallpaper hanging off, were in need of some serious TLC.
But the mess wasn’t just inside either – as the garden was in need of clearing up, with a dumped mattress and rubbish left behind.
Becky later explained that she would be renovating the home, as she noted: “[I’m] not moaning about the house, just posting the progress.”
She also revealed: “I knew the state and still took it for the area!
“Yes I accepted. I knew the house was a bad mess and needed a hell of a lot of work. I had signed to take on the house.
“I knew what I was taking on. I took the property to be close to my mum.”
In another video, the professional make-up artist was left stunned when she found yet another surprise.
As she walked through a bedroom, with bright green and blue walls, she found a large box in the top corner of the room.
As she opened the box, she found a huge hole in the ceiling, as she penned: “A little surprise along the way!”
Shocked at how the hole had been hidden, Becky later penned: “Lazy way to hide it.”
What is a council house swap?
A council house swap, also known as a mutual exchange, is a scheme for people who live in a council or housing association property who would like to swap their home with another tenant.
People often swap to get a larger or smaller home or to move to a different area.
When you mutually exchange your home, you are swapping tenancies with someone else.
Anyone with a full secure or fixed term social housing tenancy in their name with a clear rent account can do a mutual exchange.
You cannot swap your home if you:
- have an introductory tenancy
- have a probationary tenancy
- are in temporary housing
The TikTok clip, which was posted under the username @beckaevansx, has clearly left many open-mouthed, as it has quickly amassed 46,700 views.
Social media users were stunned at the state of the property and were eager to express this in the comments.
Not only this, but many explained that the same thing had happened to them too.
Get the council out asap

One person said: “Mine was the same, they left so much stuff but it was my dream area/home so I’m glad I did. 6 years later I plan on buying it soon.”
Another added: “Yep, same happened to me. I did the move closer for my family, biggest regret ever.”
A third commented: “Our exchange was horrendous, we had to fumigate it twice for fleas! Seven years on and it’s a fabulous home, I’m sure yours will be amazing once it’s done!”
Meanwhile, someone else posed: “How are they allowed to leave it in such a state with a mattress dumped in the garden!”
Whilst another user wrote: “Lovely house! Just superficial issues. You did well!”
Not only this, but one person advised: “Get the council out asap.”
To this, Becky replied and claimed: “They won’t do anything because apparently it’s a ‘swap’ so I have to sort it myself!”
