What part of ‘nonpartisan’ don’t they understand? | Letters to the editor
I say “Amen!” to your commentary and letters from readers regarding individuals and organizations that bring party affiliation to “nonpartisan” town elections, such as in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea. In this toxic environment of nationwide partisan divisions, why infect local elections with the same cancer?
For years, the town of Hillsboro Beach has held nonpartisan elections per town ordinances — until last year when the Republican Party endorsed a candidate who was suing the town (he ultimately lost the election).
This year, the same candidate is running with a new lawsuit against the town.
Once again, the Republican Party has endorsed him, even though party leaders were reminded that Hillsboro Beach elections are nonpartisan. The party has also endorsed a Republican incumbent as well.
As the former Mayor of Hillsboro Beach (who was term-limited after eight years) and a registered Republican myself, I am ashamed of both my party and fellow Republicans who blatantly disregard efforts to keep local elections local.
For the incumbent who’s involved here, who’s an excellent commissioner, perhaps it can be chalked up to a momentary lapse in judgment to fight fire with fire. But for the candidate who last year was made aware he had violated a town ordinance, there is no excuse for repeating the same offense this year.
And there’s certainly no excuse for the Republican Party to again facilitate or encourage disregard for our local ordinances.

Fred Grimm does it again
Fred Grimm once again slays it (“When the archaeologists dig us up, it’ll be a scary sight,” Column, Feb. 17).
I couldn’t decide whether to laugh or cry while reading his latest Sun Sentinel column.
Everything he said is sad but true and it’s too hilarious to make up.
What a sorry state of affairs Florida is in, being ruled by fanatics who don’t care about the true needs or problems of Floridians, and bowing at the feet of the cult leader — the orange menace.
Fred, keep doing what you do!

Our ‘thoughts and prayers’
After the shooting at the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl celebration, I could feel the heat rising to my face. Once again, we say, “Enough is enough”, and “Never again,” as we send “thoughts and prayers” to every family who lost a loved one to a shooting, because Republicans won’t do anything that could cut some of the millions of dollars they get from the gun lobby.
To them, the deaths are collateral damage.
I have compiled a list of the deadliest mass shootings in the United States from 1990 through Feb. 14, 2024, Valentine’s Day.
I wonder if any of the shooting victims also were family members of Republican elected officials who have refused to vote for any gun safety measures. Pretty sure Vegas is taking bets on it.

Would you hire this man?
I heard this question raised on a television program: Would a top Fortune 500 company hire an 80-year-old person to be its chief executive officer?
That made a lot of sense to me, as it relates to the top two contenders to be president of the United States.
