I had hair extensions for years but now my natural locks are long & glossy – people beg for my tips & I’m sharing them
A DOCTOR has shared her tips for natural long and glossy locks.
She has learned the hard way because she wore hair extensions for years and damaged her mane.
Her glorious long, shiny mane is a testament to her hair salvage tips.
People have been begging her to share them and in this post, Dr. Raj Arora (@jrrajarora) laid out her hair plan.
Her hair might be her crowning glory today, but it wasn’t always so.
“I used to bleach my hair and have extensions,” she said.
“But now this is all my own mane and I want to share with you my top secrets of how I got it like this.”
DIET
“This is important. You have to have a good balanced diet and ensure you have enough protein, but not too much, and Omega-3, and zinc,” she said.
“Protein is important to build your hair cells and keep your hair nice and strong,” she added.
- Protein – found in lean meat, poultry, and fish.
- Zinc – is found in all sorts of nuts, including Brazil nuts, walnuts, and leafy vegetables.
- Omega-3 fatty acids – are found in cottage cheese, tuna, salmon, and plant oils.
KNOW YOUR HAIR TYPE
“We all talk about skin type, but hair type is no different,” she said.
“We all have different genetics, different scalps and we all know how we react to different skincare and hair products as well.”
Dr. Raj has naturally oily hair and has reduced the washing every week.
“I’ve been able to bring it down to once a week,” she said.
CHOOSE THE RIGHT HAIR PRODUCTS
Now you know your hair type, you may want to choose the right products for your hair.
“Make sure your shampoos are tailored to your hair type and your scalp,” she wrote.
“So if you’ve got an oiler scalp you might want to go for something that’s going to exfoliate a bit more.
“If you’ve got a dry scalp, you will need something a bit more hydrating.”
HAIRCUTS
Book your appointments every six to eight weeks, she said. It will help your hair grow and keep it healthy.
“I think it’s important to have a regular trim. Just a tiny amount if you’re trying to grow your hair,” she said.
“This will help with split ends and help maintain the hair and keep it strong and looking thick as well,” she added.
HAIR MAINTENANCE
It’s common practice to protect skin from the sun, but less so for hair.
“Protect your hair from sunlight and UV rays which can damage the hair follicles,” she said.
“And reduce your use of heated devices, like straighteners, and blow driers.
“You might give it a quick blow and then let your hair dry naturally. I found that helped repair my hair,” she said.
If you still want to use these devices, use products that will help protect the hair, she urged.
BONUS TIPS
- Oil your hair from mid-length down, only once a fortnight. This helped give her hair the strength and the gloss it needed without making it too greasy.
- Use Olaplex No. 3. She soaked her hair in it from the scalp down and left it in overnight. She did this once a month.
- Massage the scalp. She did a dry massage with a hand massager for 30 minutes every two weeks, to encourage a good blood flow to the scalp and stimulate hair follicles.
- Add rosemary oil maybe once a week or every two weeks. “It can strengthen the hair and help it grow,” she said.
- Use soft hair accessories. Try not to pull hair back too harshly or too regularly. If you do, use a soft or silk hair tie.
